Yes. She's essentially "retired" that title for now but no one can take away what she achieved.

I don't like her at all, but she definitely is!

She used to be a pop icon. Is her legacy enough to be considered as pop royalty among MJ and Madonna though? I don't think so.

Pop icon, legend and phenomenon. I highly doubt anyone will replicate her debut. Ever.

Definitely not. If she continued the way she was going she could have been, but I'd consider her to be on a secondary level (which is why she is called the princess).

Sorry, this is from a huge Britney fan, but she's the biggest popstar of the past decade. She's reached a level in popular culture that has yet to be surpassed by any of her successors on the charts and will be remembered as the defining sound of pop music from 1999-2010, possibly later.
I will say that I HATE Femme Fatale and I'm very disapponted with Britney Jean. In fact, when I received my Femme Fatale fan edition, picture book, lithographs, and all, I almost burned it when I listened to the album. She totally lost her sound in favor of rehashing every other pop artist's songs and that was very unacceptable for someone of her status. I hope she solidies her throne again soon before her tragic death at probably, oh, around 45-50. May she RIP.

It's always cool to read unbiased opinions even if some members are prolapsing biased opinions in the midst of this.

But you cannot be serious, no matter what Britney goes though in her personal life or the success or lackthereof her forthcoming musical endeavors her LEGACY as a POP icon and, henceforth pop royalty is already cemented.
Sure she can further tarnish that legacy but no one can erase the impact she's had in pop culture or music in general.

Beautiful post

Are you the poster behind that ATRL -famous post about how Kylie Minogue is global because gay clubs everywhere play her?

Much as I hate to admit it, yes. Though her sales are solely what grants her the status. She's not that impressive otherwise. Also, delusionals need to stop lumping her with MJ and Madonna.

Beyonce has yet to achieve the hype that Britney had at her peak, but she is the absolute closest. Also, Britney can release two relative flop albums and still be all over the media.

Of course!
She has earned her spot and she keeps her spot. She's more like a Grand Dame now than a Pop Princess though.

uhhh... I'd say she defined the sound of pop music from 1999-2002 max. DEFINITELY not after 2010. In what way would you say she has?

In what, overall album sales? I'll give her that. In reputation, respect, critical acclaim, touring, films, album sales since Beyoncé debuted, Beyoncé has outshone her.
