Reeces' Best Of '08: Top 30 Albums (30-28)
30. Gnarls Barkley "The Odd Couple"
Released: March 18th, 2008
Genre: Soul
Producers: Danger Mouse
US Billboard 200: #12
I never got the opportunity to hear their first effort so I didn't have any high expectations, and I was instantly blown away at first listen. Most of the songs are very dark and have a deep and depressing message, Would Be Killer or A Little Better, which revolves around Cee-Lo's father death, to mention a few. But there are also fun tracks like the lead single Run or the catchy Whatever. If you're a big soul music fan or if you enjoyed the singles, I highly recommend this album, you won't be disappointed.
Standout Tracks:- "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"
- "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)"
- "Whatever"
- "A Little Better"
- "Going On"
29. Ashanti "The Declaration"
Released: June 2nd
Genre: R&B, Pop
Producers: Ashanti, L. T. Hutton, Jermaine Dupri, Darkchild, Akon, Babyface, Channel 7, Keith Ross, Stengaard, Mario Winans, Chad Beatz, Neff-U
US Billboard 200: #6
After a four year break, R&B diva Ashanti is back with her fourth studio album The Declaration. I'm not a big fan, but after hearing the lead single The Way That I Love You, I knew I had to give the album a fair chance. Ashanti nails every track vocally, and I was pleasantly surprised. My favorite track, The Things You Make Me Do featuring Robin Thicke, is purely sexiness at its peak, and it's very obvious that the chemistry was there. While the up-tempo tracks You're Gonna Miss and So Over You draw you in with their infectious beats and hot summer vibe. At the end, the album was a solid R&B record worth giving a listen.
Standout Tracks:- "The Way That I Love You"
- "The Things You Make Me Do (Feat. Robin Thicke)"
- "So Over You"
- "You're Gonna Miss This"
- "Mother"
28. John Legend "Evolver"
Released: October 28th
Genre: R&B, Pop, Soul
Producers: Kanye West, John Legend, Malay, KP, Dave Tozer, Midi Mafia, Dapo Torimiro, will.i.am, Trevor Horn, Devo Springsteen, The Neptunes, Supa Dups, Teddy Riley
US Billboard 200: #4
The next album in the list comes from one of the best male voices in R&B today. His lyrical content is heavy, his voice is a little deeper, and we can easily tell that he looks extremely comfortable behind the keys rather than dancing on stage. The album is filled with mostly mid-tempos, including If You're Out There, that was used in Obama's campaign, if I'm not wrong. But there is a song in particular that clearly stands out, his duet with Brandy. Quickly is simply perfect, both vocally and lyrically. One of the best R&B records of the year, hands down.
Standout Tracks:- "Quickly (Feat. Brandy)"
- "It's Over" (Feat. Kanye West)"
- "If You're Out There"
- "Green Light (Feat. Andre 3000)"
- "Everybody Knows"
