well i'm german:
I don't know how you think it is taught. It is taught very objectively. We got to read Anne Frank. Went to museums, even to once in 9th grade, i think, to a concentration camp. Nothing gets prettified.
Learning about the nazi regime is a big part of our education. Not only in historical lesson.
I for example had to interpret a speech of Göbbels in 13th grade for my final german exam. How he influenced the people and what he really meant, what kinds of speech he used, etc.
We are taught that it is part of our history that we can not proud of, but that it was not ourself (the younger generation) who did it. We can learn from it in a way to never let anything like that happen again.

I had a German foreign exchange student friend and she said a lot of things that she learned in her World History class in the US was left out when she learned it in Germany. She didn't believe some stuff too lol.
Wait actually I don't think it was her. There was an Asian girl here the same year and I think she was the one pressed about it.

If I remember school correctly, history classes are almost ww2 exclusive! It was like ... romans, greeks, nazis, nazis, nazis, nazis. And Hitler's definately not treated as a hero.
What's interesting maybe is that there is a tendecy to separate Germany from the Nazis. So mostly it's not not "Our grandfathers invaded France", but "The evil Nazi plague invaded France, thank god we were libarated by the alliance troops".

German here - intense, guilt-inducing, long years of ww2 history from every angle. No denial like Japan, quite the opposite. Every student in my district saw Schindler's list. We visited Buchenwald. [Edit:Spelling]

im not german but the german people ive spoken to say that they are definitely taught about the holocaust in all its gory details and that they teach it like they would do in america, without trying to twist it or putting a different slant on it. Many germans actually still have residual guilt over it, even though obviously they werent involved.

Well, this isn't about the way they teach it in Germany but I can share something..
My World History teacher just skipped the Holocaust basically when we were studying about the World Wars.
He's Lebanese and obviously anti-Israel but still..
Like, we got to the page in the book and he goes 'Yeah, skip this part. This didn't happen...'

The same reason we're not taught in detail about how cruel we were to the Japanese Americans in Internment camps following the Pearl Harbor bombing.

It's not a topic in history class exclusively. Especially in German classes we read many books about the holocaust, like, "The Reader" or the diary of Anne Frank are basic lecture kids get confronted with from 4th grade on. It's always taught objectively, with a glimpse of honest guilt.

WW1 however always seems like fading into the background. There's a lot of talking about WW2 and the nazi regime, but rare discussions about WW1.

when i learned about these camps in history while learning about the holocaust i wondered what really happened b/c my teacher told us it was "not that bad" and "the japanese were probably safer in these camps after pearl harbor". will anybody who know about this tell me what happened because it feels like hypocrisy that we learned that the holocaust was wrong and can never ever happen again when we detained japanese in camps at the exact same point in time.

We are though. Even the reparations we paid to them later, etc. is taught in detail.
