Well, I didn't want to do this, but since I have a Mariah Carey avatar people just have to bring her on into this. I can have an opinion on Whitney without us having to discuss Mariah, but the can of worms was opened by other people, not me, so here it goes.

Mariah is no Aretha either and looking at the sales from Charmbracelet and Glitter, its amazing that Just Whitney outsold them both respectively especially when Whitney's "downfall" was much more publicized than Mariah's. Charmbracelet didn't even break platinum until after the success of Emancipation. Whitney is 45 years old and has been performing since 1984 now lets compare that to Ms. Mariah. Mariah came on the scene in 1990 and is only 38.... what happened to her voice? Whitney did drugs.... what did Mariah do? Whitney went on many WORLD tours throughout her career..... how many tours did Mariah do with more than 21 dates & how many WORLD tours did she do in her career? Nobody exaggerates nothing about Whitney, what she did was revolutionary.... she is the most successful black female singer of ALL TIME. That alone is why she is greatness then add in that all of her movies were blockbusters along with the soundtracks. She is the only singer to win an Emmy just for a television performance. WHO ELSE HAS DONE THAT??? NOBODY, CASE CLOSED!!!

The epitome of a deluded Whitney fan. Where do I start?
From Wikipedia:
-----Despite being one of Carey's lowest selling albums, Charmbracelet has sold approximately 1 million copies in the U.S and more than 3 million copies worldwide.
-----[Just Whitney] debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 205,000 and eventually achieved platinum status in the U.S., where it sold 731,000 copies, becoming Houston's lowest seller at the time
An unsourced statement (as opposed to the sourced statement for Charmbracelet) goes on to say that Just Whitney sold 3 million copies worldwide, but of course someone put one of those [citation needed] tags, so I doubt it's true. But basically what you said is wrong. Just Whitney only outsold Glitter.
Whitney and Mariah's debut albums came out 5 years apart, and Whitney hasn't done **** for 5 years, so basically where Mariah is now in her career is where Whitney was with Just Whitney...and basically where she still is because it's not like she's been out on tour or doing anything productive.
Oh and as for "Whitney ruined her voice with drugs, what did Mariah do?"...I think that's first of all a very sad statement when you think drugs are a legitimate excuse. What kind of trash is this woman, a drug addict in her thirties and forties? Sad. We saw how classy this "lady" is in Being Bobby Brown, of course, as well.
On the other hand, Mariah's recent vocal problems stem from the fact that she has vocal fold nodules. Look them up on wikipedia. They're a medical condition, and I'm not going to sit here and explain but it's not like she asked for them. So let's see...vocal nodules versus blew her voice out with crack? I say Mariah's route is a little more respectable. I think that she does quite a good job despite that problem, whereas Whitney still sounds like ass and can't hold ANY notes out for **** in that clip Mazen posted. I mean, it would be great if we could have other clips for comparison, but Whitney has done absolutely nothing musically in the last 6 years. I'm sure you could find some bad Mariah performances, because I could too, but at the same time I could easily find some great Mariah performances from recent years. When her voice is rested, she still sounds great, but Whitney couldn't even do much vocally in the studio for her last album.
I don't see how Whitney is a revolutionary, by the way, considering that she never wrote her own material or really did anything different than a typical female vocalist. Maybe you should have used a different word, because revolutionary certainly doesn't describe Whitney Houston. It definitely doesn't describe Mariah either, and I'm not too delusional to see that. Whitney can sing and act. Big deal. So could a lot of people before her. Oh and an Emmy for a TV performance? That's great for her. I don't think it closes any cases, though?
And as for being the most successful black female singer of all time...well that's nice for her but Mariah has still sold more, so I don't see the relevance of Mariah being only
half black in this equation.
I didn't want to compare these two, but when it comes down to it, one of them has a career right now, and the other does not. When Whitney comes back with her new album, we'll talk again. Until then, we're comparing a current recording artist with someone who only exists in the past.
Oh and that little youtube video was cute. This album era is far from over for Mariah, and I guess I can understand how saddening it must be to see her actually out and about recording and releasing music when Whitney's been working on the same album for 4 years. It must comfort you a bit to take solace in believing she's a failure. Didn't I hear Whitney was having trouble paying her bills a few years ago?
