A #1 single has to be a hit song, a #1 album doesn't have to be a hit album.
So harlem shake was a hit single? Wrecking.ball was. Sent back to #1 with a viral video and that girl in the first kiss video got into the top 10 and she wasn't even in the Top 500 on itunes.
#1 single for sure. Anyone can have a #1 album, and it doesn't really matter that much anyway, the chart position of the album is solely based on sales (first week sales are when albums tend to hit this most often). #1 singles are usually the result of longevity; lots of sales, airplay and streams.
Album because most randoms with #1 singles don't get #1 albums.. or #5 albums sometimes.
Shows that a lot of people are invested in me as a whole, not just my one song. It'll be a slap to me if you can sing Can't Get You Out of My Head word for word but can't tell me the first 5 songs on my tracklist

I hate to break it to you, but there are the same number of weeks on both charts, and there are FAR more total #1 albums than #1 singles.
