About 32,000 people are killed by guns every year. Those aren't assault rifle massacres, those are poor people shooting each other with .380s and 9mms.
The most common guns used in crimes are all handgun calibers, .22, 9mm, .380, etc, as well as 12-gauge shotguns.
Handguns are clearly the bigger societal problem!
You don't need to be afraid of assault rifles, you need to be afraid of some guy with a cheap-ass 9mm.

Of course cheap handguns are more common, I was simply correcting the people who were implying that making ALL guns illegal was a serious idea being proposed. The major gun control propositions are a) reinstating the ban on assault weapons, as there is NO logical argument for them being obtainable, and b) stronger background checks, to prevent people with criminal records or a history of mental instability from having access to guns as easily as they do.
If you think handguns should be banned that's another topic. I personally think they should be allowed for self defense provided one is subjected to a rigorous background check, and the penalties for being caught with an illegal gun should be harsher

That said, criminals will be criminals, so it wouldn't be fair to deny people like the woman in the OP the ability to defend themselves in cases like these.
