But realistically, I highly doubt they're going to change this rule again. Evanescence, JoJo, Beyoncé missing retirement by only several days was stupid, yes, and now we've got 3 more videos that are being screwed over...more to come, I'm sure. There were also videos that couldn't even reach 30 days, like Maroon 5 and Daughtry, yet so many were able to go past 40 from 2002-2006. I don't get it.

There would have to be 10 debuts a day which is impossible.

Umm... I don't think so. The videos that spent 40+ days on the c/d were out when TRL was aired 5 times a day, not 4.

Since Music is a business, I doubt that TRL will listen to fans rather than to record companies. Just like Billboard having a policy of when a single becomes a recurrent and is removed from the "hot" charts which it adjusts according to suggestions from record companies, MTV/TRL also bases its retirement and video premiere policies from record company suggestions as well.

In business terms, a music video is a promotional tool to encourage people to buy/download an artist's product.

If an old video is still played (which means being promoted), then the new single/video of the artist won't be promoted. So, the new singles' sales suffer.

That's why, in my opinion, MTV would rather have the new video out there. It encourages more sales of the albums/singles of the artist.

but a lot of the videos that fell off in the first place werent replaced. like lil mama and MCR. so no sales are really "suffering"

if trl retirement age was lowered to 35 (hypthically (sp?) speaking):
if trl comes on 4 days a week
35 days=8.75 weeks on trl
if trl was on 5 days a week

It may also be TRL's fault. They premiere new video from that artist before letting it retire. Example Rihanna's Shut Up And Drive.

Only in this case would I say something in TRL's defense. Although I have no proof, I think that MTV has very little say in when they get to show videos. I believe labels send the videos to MTV and tell them "premiere this between [random date] and [random date]."

I don't think that TRL is that cruel to have Umbrella in the Top 5 with only 2 days left until retirement and purposely screw it... I believe that Def Jam sent them SUAD only a week or two before its premiere, and TRL had no choice but to show it, because as we all know, Rihanna must have something new out right after her current single has peaked.

Does everyone remember when that guy who worked for TRL came to give us updates on the schedule? TRL plans its premieres and first looks far in advance. (BTW, where did that guy go? He seemed to really take in some of our ideas, and he had great knowledge of the cool stuff MTV had planned...)

yeah whatever happened to him.i hope he see this thread and how trl is screwing videos out of retirement.they should have gone with 40 day retirement rule sooner cause trl with the 50 day retirement rule with only 4 shows per week.it taking the about same amount of time videos to retire with 65 day retirement rule was in effect.they should have just changed it sooner.gosh trl can be so dumb at times.sorry for rant.
