I listened to Ariana Grande's new album "Yours Truly". Now I am going to write up a full track by track review of it. I hope you enjoy reading it and if you'd like to give me any feedback please feel free to do just that. You know I love to hear from you guys when it comes to my music reviews
Honeymoon Avenue: My reaction to the first track was confused but slightly pleased. It's a song that seemed to include many elements of music within it. From theatrical dramatic violins, scat, motown music, electronica and also a little bit of beat boxing. A nice element to include actually because with all the high tones it needed a bass sound to level it out. Cleverly crafted and careful production. I must admit I was slightly taken aback but then I eventually settled into it as one whole thing and was loving how it all worked together. Definitely one of the better tracks on the album. One that doesn't pretend to be something it's not but rather everything it could be. 9/10.
Baby I: This track is just a basic imitation of Mariah's 90's to early 2000's sound. Anything you hear within it you could hear in any of her songs back then. Including a thousand time repetition of "baby". One of the worst songs on the album. Not much else to say about that one. 2/10.
Right Here: It's interesting enough to capture your attention but interest diminishes when Big Sean comes in. It quickly changes from interesting, dynamic and catchy to boring, typical and basic. Further more Big Sean did not need two raps in this track. 3/10.
Tattooed Heart: This track is FANTASTIC! It sounds like her. No imitations or forced enunciation's here. It's pure, natural and an honest expression of wanting to be someone's lover and have them believe in their love and not throw it out the window as quickly as anyone else's love would be. It's sophisticated, soulful, and vocally strong! Easily the best song on the entire album for it's clever hooks and changes. 10/10!!!
Lovin' It: Much like "Right Here" this track starts off interesting but then quickly changes tempo and gets boring and basic. It's ridiculously short too. It's just filler material, but it has potential to be something so much more than it is. 5/10.
Piano: This one took my heart straight away. From the male vocals singing the intro of echoed "Ohoooa Ohoooa"'s to the snaps, claps and the piano riffs sounding off all the way through the verses ending it off with the drum beats taking lead focus into the chorus. I could hear a funky electric guitar riff in the chorus too. It's not very prominent but it's there. It's both musically progressive and catchy and that really appeals to me. 10/10.
Daydreamin': Nice intro, but it doesn't go anywhere as far as that. She has such sultry, raspy vocals but the generic electronics make their way into the track and you can't understand a damn thing from then on. Production absolutely ruins the potential in my opinion. It's a song that tries to be too much and fit everything in at the same time very much like the first track does. Except it doesn't work. 7/10.
The Way: No comment on the single. Everyone has heard it and already made their opinions known. So I'll skip the explanations and just give my opinion. All you need to know is that I don't think much of the song but I do take notice of Ariana's impressive vocals. She's able to transition from and to different registers in her range with ease. 4/10.
You'll Never Know: Again Mariah Carey is very distinctive here in the vocals, production, structure and repetition of the lyrics. Don't bother with this one. Just go listen to The Emancipation Of Mimi. You'll find it done much more authentically there. 3/10.
Almost Is Never Enough: This song I'm sure everyone has heard by now as it's the current single for the novel adapted into the movie "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" but I will give my thoughts anyway. I love this one. I think it's a beautiful soulful ballad. I never expected a voice like that to come out of Nathan Sykes, a member of the British boyband The Wanted but of course it's Grande that's the focus point here. Vocal tone and musical sound belongs here. It doesn't sound like it came from someone or something else and if people pick up Carey listening to this it's just because of her random whistles all the way through the last chorus which is a subjective issue with her voice. I actually get more Alicia Keys but that's just me. Also I'd like to mention that the album version is MILES better than the single version. So pick up this version of the song, not the single. I'd say this is one of the best tracks on the album. 10/10.
Popular Song: I honestly thought this was a Mika song because I picked up the Broadway rip-off hook in the chorus from "Wicked: The Musical" and Mika is noted for ripping off Broadway productions in his music as well as the late Freddie Mercury of Queen. Opinion from me of the song is as follows: Silly, stupid, ridiculous, pointless, awful. Worst song on the album easily. 1/10.
Better Left Unsaid: This song could have been one of the best if not the best on the entire album if it was not for the electronic dance production in the chorus murdering it and the DJ shouting out "If you wanna party, put your hands up". Why was this necessary? Who's idea was it to **** this potential smash up? It was great starting off with the piano and what sounded like enchanting twinkling bell sounds. I loved the way the production was going. I don't even know what she was thinking with this track. I mean talk about completely compromising who you are as an artist. A friend of mine informed me it was a cover and not a rip-off but that's not my issue with it. My issue is that it sounded like an original, contemporary piece to start off with and then it turned into annoying, typical DJ EDM. The fact that this track ends off the standard album as well. It's just so disappointing and makes me rethink my whole opinion of "Yours Truly". 2/10.
Final comments: Vocally Ariana needs to work on her articulation. I couldn't even make out half the lyrics because of the way she phrases them in many of songs on this album.
Honeymoon Avenue, Tattooed Heart, Piano and Almost Is Never Enough are for me the best songs on this album and Daydreamin' gets honorable mention for at least trying not to be so basic. It was a fusion failure in the end though. Honeymoon Avenue does the fusion thing much better.
