Since we are talking about the whole eras, we can easily fix that by taking this to 2005-2006. Thanks.
That makes more sense. I would vote for Madonna then because she was more successful world wide plus had successful ww singles + tour.

I mean, US wise, Mariah is obviously the best answer. But WBT wasn't so big elsewhere. It was either moderate or flopped - same goes for TEOM's album sales.
COADF had more global hits (though it's only two, it's one more than Mariah had during her era).
TEOM was massive in the states. COADF did moderately - was a HUGE success on a WW scale. It sold over 8M outside the states and Mariah only sold about 3M.
Well, I was answering the question that the OP asked about which artist was more successful in 2005 and no matter what you'd like to believe, Mariah was more successful in the U.S. & WW in 2005.
1) Mariah Carey - The Emancipation Of Mimi [6.972.000 copies]
2) Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway [5.493.000 copies]
3) Gwen Stefani - Love, Angel, Music, Baby [4.685.000 copies]
4) Madonna - Confessions On A Dance Floor [4.031.000 copies]
5) Shakira - Fijación Oral Volume 1 [2.293.000 copies]
6) Enya - Amarantine [2.123.000 copies]
7) Jennifer Lopez - Rebirth [1.639.000 copies]
8) Nicole Scherzinger - PCD [1.632.000]
9) Beyoncé- Number Ones [1.615.000 copies]
10) Carrie Underwood - Some Hearts [1.538.000]
Sis, please. Madonna is always guaranteed to sell more ww because she makes dance/pop/electornic music that Europe uses while Mariah's music consists of Pop infused with R&B/Hip-Hop. I mean the logic.
Lol. Confessions. Hung Up was incredible and set records, and Sorry was a worldwide smash and the US was too ignorant to play it. That album was the ultimate comeback.
Don't get me wrong though, TEOM was a great comeback as well. I just can't **** with anything on the album except for the singles. Shake it Off >>>

I see. And it's not necessarily her genre, it's the artist who sells the name too. Madonna can sell off of her name. Not saying Mariah can, but clearly Madonna is more global than Mariah, pop or not.
But the US market = rest of the world, though, at that time, that's why both of those albums sold the same amount of copies worldwide. And it's not like Emancipation was a total flop outside the US. About half of its total sales actually came from outside the US.
Im from EU and old enough to remember these eras. While Madonna was huge everywhere, Mariah was irrelevant.
Hung Up >>>>>>> Mariahs career
Stop lying. I'm from Europe, too and Mariah was EVERYWHERE. Just because her singles didn't do as much as Madonna's doesn't mean she was totally irrelevant. We Belong Together and Get Your Number were all over the radio and TV.
Mariah was hardly everywhere in Europe And certainly not to the same extent as Madonna.
I already mentioned Madonna was bigger. But We Belong Together was big in the summer of 2005. I was 15 back then, I remember well. Radios and TV channels played it a lot and the video was discussed a lot.
