That's overkill. Your friend really shouldn't be at the gym longer than 1.5 hours and that is pushing it, especially if that is all lifting. The best exercise for you is 40 minutes - 1 hour of constant cardio. It is best for your heart. good blood flow, keeping your arteries clear, etc. Lifting in moderation is still important for muscle growth though.

Normally I do about 5-10 minutes of cardio (cross-trainer usually), and then the rest of the time on weights. I'm really pleased with my progress though, I used to be really skinny, but I've bulked out a very decent amount now, especially my chest, back and upper legs.
