And don't forget that everybody HATED Sexyback when it came out. The GP was NOT here for it at all, but look how things ended up.

Yeah, exactly.
I was surprised to see the hype on here, since I didn't think he'd be ATRL's type. And now everybody is acting shocked that the song is urban sounding. I wonder if people even listened to his songs in the first place because almost his entire discography is urban sounding, it's produced by Timbaland AND we were told beforehand it'd be R&B anyway, so why are people shocked? lol
And people are saying this is a one-off, but we've got an R&B song at #1 on iTunes, and a hip hop song at #2 on iTunes right now. This hasn't happened in a long time.

ATRLers were expecting a new pop subgenre.

ATRL always underestimates the male artists especially if they don't release a dance song.
Everyone thought Bruno would flop with Locked Out Of Heaven a look how things ended.

There are different types of R&B though. People are shocked because this is at least or even more R&B than Until The End Of Time. People expect him to do stuff thats more along the lines of urban pop, not UAC material that even core urban artists wouldn't do.
And I wouldn't put too much stock in the #1 and #2 yet. The #1 is a product of hype, and #2 has alt-pop appeal (A standard hip hop track wouldn't be that high)

And produced by an EDM music producer with a little dubstep breakdown.

I don't get the hate, it's a great song. Well I DO get it, people expected a movement into the dance sound.. but even that was getting hate at the idea of him doing that. He wasn't going to win here, but luckily ATRLers don't possess the high quality of taste they imagine they do. Not when some handful are still hoping for a Paris Hilton comeback.

exactly, and not ATRL only, half of the pop stans in general is not here for the guys
i guess its because the females are more, but if we're talking rap, female rappers are weak in the rap community in general, that's why they use pop vibes

This is not a pop only thing though. If you look around here, a lot of the people who are core R&B listeners generally don't seem to like it. They know what good R&B is, and they aren't seduced by the hype.
And a lot of the people who are going "OMG! R&B is back! Real music!!!" aren't even regular R&B listeners LOL

"I think 'Suit & Tie' is very different and I feared that his
time away from the music industry would produce an
out-of-touch single, like Mariah Carey's last year
['Triumphant (Get 'Em)," which stalled at No. 53 on R&B/
Hip-Hop Songs]," Pattie Moreno, PD of Pop Songs
reporter KHHM Sacramento, Calif., says. "However, he
managed to bring a very sexy record to the table. Jay-Z
adds grown-man credibility and Timberlake's R&B touch
and Robin Thicke-esque vocals add a smooth edge."
|
at the Mariah dragging. She really drove her pop appeal through the sh*tter with that song lol.

It's R&B with more of a jazz influence than most standard R&B tracks have. I still don't see why the hate is Justified.
And what would "good R&B" be, since you are clearly the expert?

It's sad people are acting like this is something fresh when so many other songs are ignored. It's only because it's JT that it's doing well. sigh
|
Your Body would have been huge had she released the explicit version.
Justin is #1 on iTunes and started off well on radio so thats actually something to go off of... he is not in the Xtina boat.
Suit & Tie is such a throwback jam.

The song is VERY Marvin Gaye, Al Green 70's R&B so I'm curious how it's not good R&B???

"Just like Justin brought Pharrell and Timbaland's beats to the mainstream in 2002, R&B has been having a huge resurgence in the underground with Frank Ocean, the Weeknd and Miguel. I think Justin will bring that movement to the mainstream in 2013."
|
So, pop radio/mainstream radio doesn't care about R&B unless a white guy who was already massive on pop radio does it? Sorry, but S&T is basically a Robin Thicke track (which was obviously implied in the article), and it's been done many times in recent history, unlike offerings from Miguel, Frank, and The Weeknd, but because they're too new and black, pop radio won't give them more than a peak position of 30 something. Please.

I use loads of music. One hour I can listen Evanescence, the next one Destiny's Child, the next one My Chemical Romance, Eminem, Robyn, Sia, Santigold or Imagine Dragons etc, That's what I mean from time to time. It just has to fit the mood!

They don't know WHAT they're talking about. This is such a R&B throwback in the vein of Marvin Gaye.
