It's clearly not going to flop. But it may just not be received well. The install user base is gonna be huge. I mean its a new version of windows, people upgrade automatically. Vista even sold 40 million.

I just see W8 being implemented in businesses VERY slowly but it will be successful.

It's super hard to explain, so I took my own screenshots. I figured people were curious anyway. I opened ATRL - making it realistic for all of you lol.

sooo Desktop mode is what everyone is already familiar with. Metro is "the new start menu", and it takes up the whole screen. It's optimized for tablets. So the last two images are what you would use on a tablet (I love using it even on my laptop to be honest, its really pretty and vivid)


1. DESKTOP VIEW - Ordinary desktop view with ATRL loaded (and resized) on IE. Note that there's no start button anymore (start button/bottom left corner = Metro now).


2. Mouse pointer in top right corner; "Charms Sidebar" hovers (on right side). Not fugly.


3. Highlighting the charms sidebar "settings" function w/ mouse (Paint is open on Desktop mode, where I'm making the screen shots (I got lazy)). In my Windows 8 copy, I CANNOT CHANGE the colour of the selected bar OR Metro UI at all. But this is not the home edition, this is a *manufacturers edition*, you will not have this. There are already fixes available to change it - so don't worry about ugliness .


4. Just an example of ATRL on Metro UI Internet Explorer instead of the 1st image (which was on desktop, you have two ways of using any browser). So much prettier on Metro to be honest.


5. Random example of the default Weather app opened from Metro instead of Desktop mode.


Anyone curious about something on Windows 8? I can link to bigger pics (so I won't dominate your monitors lol, just trying to give you an idea)

i love Metro, i like the minimalistic style and the colors, i'm so proud of Microsoft doing this big change, wonder what Steve Jobs would say about it.

I'm getting a Surface so i will embrace the change with my arms open.

Windows 8 is coming out in two variations, Windows RT for devices running ARM-based processors and Windows Pro 8 for devices running x86-based processors. It's gonna be such a mess I think, lol, people don't have the patience to learn new stuff. They still haven't distributed the developer's package for people to make apps optimized for Windows 8. And I think that's the biggest problem Microsoft is going to have (confused people + unoptimized apps)... but with $1.5 B in advertising, they seem to be very prepared to stop this before it happens.

Ultimately, I think it'll be really successful. But I'm expecting people to panic and predict Microsoft's demise at the end of October/November. By mid 2013, it'll probably be quite popular and very well established,the upgrade is only $70 anyway. Doubt enterprises will switch over for a while though.

Supply chain vendors are apparently very unhappy about Windows 8. Per Business Insider, it seems that Topeka Capital analyst Brian White has been visiting with Asian supply chain manufacturers and has found that they have “overwhelmingly negative” feelings about Microsoft’s (MSFT) soon-to-be-launched operating system. To make things worse, one of White’s supply chain sources said that Windows 8 will not have any significant market impact “until the second-half of 2013.” All of these factors lead White to project that “the PC industry is headed for a muted December quarter and well below the ramp expected with new products.”

Oooh my mid-2013 prediction was a decent guess it seems! I guess everyone's just so apocalyptic these days that any launch that isn't Apple-level sales/excitement means doom.

I'm hoping the insane promo for Microsoft will make for a lot of Christmas gifts though... it's the cheaper alternative anyway. I haven't seen ANY advertising for Windows 8 outside of that advertisement and we're just barely a week away though...

I don't know if I should upgrade given that they say the UI is not particularly aimed at desktops.
