Yes it does and its so obvious.
We live in a Eurocentric society, and even the non-white artists have to go along with white standards. Its just the way it is. It also has to do with Xenophobia, which is why I can see Asian artists making it.

It's this kind of naivety that's more dangerous than racism itself. Because we should be past something doesn't mean me we are. Of course race matters in Pop music. If Rihanna had braids and dark skin, she wouldn't even have half the stans she does.
Bottom line, race will ALWAYS play a factor in everything in society. Music, politics, relationships, etc.

I guess you guys are right. I just wish we are past that but I know it still lingers in our society. I never realized it really matters in the music industry and it's sad

Didn't she smash with WFL? It honestly just depends on the music imo. If a japanese person who's really sexy wants to make catchy pop music then they'd smash. People like sexy people and catchy music, sad but true.

In a music management class, there was a case study on digital media and it is proven that white parents will more likely expose their children to white artists rather than black despite them being in the same genre. A white parent would rather her little girl go to a Justin Bieber concert even if that girl liked Mindless Behavior more. Or more likely buy a Katy Perry single off iTunes rather than Beyonce. Its not necessarily racism its just socially acceptable for them to do that.

The best selling digital single of all time is by a group composed of a black man, a half-white Latina, an Afro-Asian and a Native American Latino.
That might be a coincidence but it could be argued either way.

That's because of the music though, once a black superstar teenager comes around you'll see.
(Mindless Behavior is not a superstar aklsdjaskld)

My post was cut off mid-post and I kind of scurried to assemble a question before people were like "OMG WHY IZ UR POST WEIRD"
Shakira and Enrique are clear exceptions, admittedly. But they, with the significant exception of Hips Don't Lie, don't really get the big breakthroughs.

Why else do you think Eminem sells much more overseas than a Jay Z or a Kanye? And why Pop radio plays all his music even if thats not the format for his songs. Put 1 and 1 together.

yes.
Beyonce's always somewhat transcended race up until 4. Imo, Beyonce's 4 hasn't been as successful not because of the album's quality necessarily, imo, but because she has shown strong support for Barack Obama, thereby turning her into a psuedo-political figure for many people who might otherwise pick up her album in Target or Walmart.
if you don't believe me, look at how being political has affected Oprah (with her lackluster power and channel these past few post-obama years).

There's a reason why Rihanna and Beyonce are the only colored girls in the party.

Also it has a massive impact on behavioural expectations. My dad was furious about how gagz could act a freak but Grace jones was pretty much sneered at and ignored for being the pioneer and doing the same (they called her all sorts). And it's hard not to see it, white stars get away with worse behaviour than their black counterparts. Why do you think Bey keeps herself perfect.

I will not have you leaving out J.Lo in the OP. she has been cited as the most successful latino of all time. Only ageism comes into play with her.

Also, what about attraction? I'm sure all those little girls like Bieber cause he's "hot"
Honestly, as a white male, I've only ever found a black guy hot maybe once or twice. So the majority rules, majority of pop listeners are white females/males, they will find bieber/katy hot.

Exactly. majority of pop music listeners are white so there are more susceptible to support white acts.

But I have to add I don't think they intentionally go "OH THEY'RE BLACK? EW, LETS NOT SUPPORT THEM" It just so happens they dont find them hot and/or like their music (which is usually more r&b-ish/rapish)

Right and they still try to find something wrong with her like the pregnancy incident...No body said **** about Jessica Simpson faking a pregnancy ....the double standards are too ****ing much......

You are right as well some music may seem too cultured for others preference and that is a given....

I feel like it does.
One thing I've always found strange is that a song like If U Seek Amy by a white, American girl will get censored like crazy, but Rude Boy and S&M didn't have radio edits in America.
It's like the public expects "black" artists to more sexual and aggressive.

Yes. White folk in general are not so hot with black folk. The amount of nasty and near racist comments i've seen (in the UK) about black acts and how they look (even when the women are beautiful) is heartbreaking and disgusting.
Why do you think 1D are smashing? Oh and notice this. Simon cowell said JLS wouldnt be all that (a black pop r&b group whose debut shat all over 1D without big tv hype) and didn't bother to sign them when it was obvious they'd smash. Yet he jumped at 1D who had 0% of the live x factor or skill vocally. it's always been that way. No straight up angolan looking sista is gonna sell...why do you think the successes are whiter looking?
