Actually parts of the documentary were based on fact and the point was to open peoples minds to the possibility that there is more in the ocean than we know.

It is an excellent point. There has to be some truth somewhere when cultures from all over the world have mermaid lore going back centuries, going back to times when they could not have shared their stories or ideas, when they had no contact. How does the same image, the same story pop up all over the world if there is absolutely no foundation behind it?

Just because we don't have them in an encyclopaedia of marine life doesn't mean there isn't something out there.

If it has the body of a human it's pretty easy to see how it could swim so effortlessly. Like, if you had a giant tale instead of your legs and didn't tire easily.. you'd be at the top of the ocean in 5 minutes tbh.

I honestly didn't realize there were so many people that believe in them until just recently. it's funny how when you learn about something new, you start noticing it all over the place

I mean, I don't believe in them but maaaybe? it kinda takes the fun out of things if they're not beautiful.

You have heard of marine mammals right? Whales, dolphins etc, have adapted to take one breath that lasts for hours. There is a massive amount of water out there, if they are smart and don't want to be found they simply don't come up for air beside a boat...it's not like the ocean is choc-a-bloc full of boats.

I think the prospect of a species on the same intellectual plane as humans is beautiful in itself. I don't know if it'd be a good thing if they were fully discovered though, humans don't deal well with 'equals' and would either see them as a threat or do endless experiments on them.

Not really...

We don't know how our family tree branched off millions of years ago. The theory of evolution taught us that any animal can adapt to any circumstances given the right amount of time and the right genetic mutations. It obviously wasn't an overnight process but it is totally possible.
