Veronicas back in tune and making music
We needed to take some time off because we wanted to kill each other."
Lisa Origliasso doesn't mince her words. It's been five years since The Veronicas released an album and the twins from Brisbane know the world is wondering why they disappeared.
"People are like: 'What have you been doing these last five years - you just fell off the face of the earth'?" Lisa says.
They also know their fans are mad at their lack of output.
"I think they are getting pissed off with us," Jess says.
But the girls from Brisbane have their reasons. Bursting on to the scene with a debut album that went four times platinum in 2005, and following it up two years later with a release that smashed US and Australian charts, it's no wonder fans are confused. But after their Hook Me Up tour turned into a global circuit lasting three years, the girls needed time out. Apart.
Now 27 and sporting long, black hair, the diminutive duo say they're very different to the sisters who, at 22, became the first Australians to achieve platinum status in the US with their single, Untouched. Recharged, their coming of age will be marked with a third album release, Life On Mars, which is slated for September.
The girls describe their past two years' work as "progressive pop" that draws on everything from blues to trip-hop to rock 'n' roll, grunge and even rap.
The first single, due out in July, features a heavy-metal guitar riff performed by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who also happens to be Jess's boyfriend.
Jess calls Corgan, 45, her "best friend" and credits him with her creatively evolved self. They've dated since 2010.
"He's been the biggest influence on me personally, in all aspects of my life, musically, spiritually, just as a woman," she says.
Lisa, meanwhile, has been hanging out with fellow muso Tyler Bryant. The pair have produced a number of bluesy songs under the moniker Dead Cool Dropouts, but she won't say if they're a couple.
"Everything I have to say I put in my music, so it's all in there," she laughs.
She says the lyrics are about "falling in and out of love" and are "very raw", perhaps alluding to her broken engagement with Neighbours star Dean Geyer in 2008.
The Veronicas have also collaborated with Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns who is on two tracks.
While their visits home have been fleeting over the past eight years since moving to LA, the sisters have spent the past month in Australia, and last week shot their new album cover north of Perth.
The sisters say they're now "gypsies"with no base, but hope to spend more time here.
"We've been literally holed up in a studio for two years in our 'zone' so we almost feel like we're emerging back into reality again. Getting to come home really is exciting for us," Lisa says.
