1. The first album was released on Black Friday. First-week sales were obviously influenced by that. Regardless, that album had legs, and this album could very well do too.
2. She didn't pick an audience to promote to. Pop audiences were clearly here for her, but she didn't capitalise on it. She still hasn't properly promoted Starships, aside from American Idol and the NBA show. She should be on all the daytime and primetime shows (Ellen, GMA, DWTS, etc.) promoting to pop audiences, but she hasn't been doing it. Instead, she's been focused on doing radio tour and TV specials for urban audiences, and it's contradicted the pop strategy she had going.
3. Simply put, her urban fans have abandoned her because she's gone pop. It sucks, but at the same time, it could be the wake up call for Nicki to just focus on what works, and push that.
Just to be clear - regardless of sales, Pop Nicki > Urban Nicki
Nicki is an international star because of her pop music. She is about to become the face of Pepsi because of her pop music. She is in all the major press because they see her as a popstar. Now the promo she employs needs to reflect that.
The album potentially has very good legs - it just needs to have its marketing focused on pop audiences.
