I think the fact she's "ugly" compared to people like Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyonce has played in her favour. Her fans feel like they can visually relate to her, rather than have to dream about looking like her. It's a different relationship, on a purely superficial level.

Her being "ugly" (she's not, but for the sake of the argument) helps her credibility. She's not just another "vapid pop star selling sex."
