I prefer to call myself black, as I don't think I go by the technical definition of the term African-American. I tend to refer to other black people as black as well, unless there's a context for calling them African-American or if I know they prefer to be called that. Funnily enough, back in the day when "negro" and "colored" were in popular usage, calling someone black was actually considered offensive.
