It saddens me, I knew who Janet was before I did Madonna.

I think she was a bit underrated and overshadowed by her brother.

Becca's from the UK. Janet's never even had a number one single there. I don't think most of you realize this.

Control slayed, but True Blue outsold it domestically and internationally (by a lot overseas).
She got four number ones off of Rhythm Nation, but did she get four number ones consecutively from her debut album? No. The one they call Mariah did.
Again was a huge hit and an Oscar nominated ballad - but it came off the heels of I Will Always Love You, did it not?
So, you see what I mean. And it's no shade cause I can't stand Whitney.

I get what you're saying. She wasn't as big INTERNATIONALLY as the other ones. I do think the SuperBowl kinda ERASED her from the industry a bit. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure the girls would be on the Janet bandwagon today.

Oh definitely. Even though Damita Jo was a BIT of a mess, it still had some hits on it. That day in 2004 will unfortunately live on in infamy for Janet fans.
Janet was still BIG internationally - but she certainly was never number one anywhere. Well maybe Australia and South Africa. I think that's it?

And just because you bitches only heard one song doesn't mean Janet wasn't BIG. Do your research girls.

Well, it's a shame because I really like Janet - but I didn't know anything about her before I joined ATRL.

Sister, when talking about sales and impact she is, especially when comparing her to MJ, Madonna, etc. She's great and I prefer her, but the facts are still there.

She wasn't local, but she also wasn't all that international either. North America and Japan were probably her biggest markets that she had continuous success in, with casual success in places like Australia.
Janet never penetrated Europe like the other hugely successful women did like Mariah, Celine, Madonna, Whitney. In Europe she never saw the impact of the others and that limited her global reach a great deal because those markets were sizable. She's still notable but there is a reason why she isn't considered to be apart of the Elite and why she is consistently overshadowed by other women in the industry. The 80's belonged to Madonna and the 90's belonged to the voices. She couldn't compete on that level, although she had her own success.

It's so weird. I remember how big Janet was during the janet. Era. She was every damn where.
Not to mention... she is the only female and the first person to have an MTV icon special. Ch...

I can't believe something as benign as showing your tit on TV for a nanosecond could scar someone's legacy like this.
I grew up knowing her, so I always assumed she was as big as the other greats. I'm shocked that she hasn't made an impact wordwide.

And I agree, Janet deserves more credit around here.

It's because Janet and Prince don't have the same level of influence and sucess as Madonna and MJ.

This is all true. She also competed with Cyndi heavily in the mid-end of the 80's.

She IS apart of the elite actually. I never said she wasn't. People just fail to mention her. And I think it has a lot to do with the Superbowl.
