Lana Del Ray - "Born To Die"
To kick off the list, "Born to Die" is the latest of Lana Del Ray discography and it grabbed my attention from the moment I watched the live version. The thumping beat against her solemn voice makes for a good listen, and I hope we see a lot more of her next year.
Nicki Minaj - "Roman In Moscow"
Another late entry into 2011, but her buzz single from next year's release sparked my interest in Mixtape Nicki. Clocking in at under 3 minutes, this song doesn't stop. Every line gets me pumped, from her insane delivery to the return of Rrrrrrroman! I have no doubt about her blowing up next year, I just pray she drops some more stuff like this.
Avril Lavigne - "What The Hell"
Minus the music on New Years Eve, WTH was the first song I listened to in 2011. It may be the most radio friendly song on her album, but what a way to kick the campaign off. As I hoped, Avril brought me another fun song that had me rocking out despite a shocking hangover.
Frank Ocean - "Novacane"
Back in May, I read about this guy and the trouble he had with Def Jam. "Novacane" was the first single from his album, and when I first listened I hated it. It wasn't until weeks later in a slightly drunken state when I listened again, and I put my change in music taste down to it. I now love this song and the euphoric feel it gives, although I could only listen to it in certain moods.
The Saturdays - "White Lies"
A day in November, I was listening through the On Your Radar iTunes previews in sheer disappointment. I had hoped so much more from this group and all they could give me were pass me down demos. HOWEVER, when Track 11 kicked in at the chorus, my ears chirped up. This was the needle in a haystack, I had sipped the tea. White Lies is everything the remainder couldn't speak, just epic.
Kelly Rowland - "Motivation"
A grower for me, but when I was in the right mood this simply shone at me with sex appeal. Kelly can do no wrong with her R&B jams, and the Lil Wayne feature topped it off. When the video came out, wow - she deserved all the success with it and I hope to hear more on the next album.
Last.FM
Many already use the service, and with no success I attempted to give it ago back in 2009. However, it wasn't until June of this year when I finally got Last.FM working. For the first few weeks I simply scrobbled and looked back on my listening history, but when I accidentally clicked on the Radio tab, I was opened up to endless new music. I still occasionally use this, but a later discovery (stay tuned!) completely demolished such service. If you haven't already got it, GET IT... and then add me.
