The ArchAndroid, Body Talk/Robyn, Homogenic/Vespertine/Medulla, Arular/Kala, New Amerykah Pat 1/2, etc. are all just damn good albums.
I love this argument though. If an underground album is good, it must only be because the reviewers are "hipsters" or whatever, when they give underground music ****** scores all the time.

Only underground music is rated honestly and without bias by most critics. If it's good like Robyn or Janelle Monae or whatever they will give good marks, if it's ****** it will get ****** marks. Best believe that had Gaga come out with Body Talk, it would not be sitting pretty at 86 on Metacritic. When was the last time a totally mainstream pop album has gotten a really good score on Metacritic? Confessions On A Dancefloor circa 2005 I dare say.

The artists are "not in our faces" every time you turn around. You really don't hear about them in everyday life. I would say management and promotion but anyone can have that with the right strategy but not have the talent to go along. Most that do have that true talent get un noticed because they stayed "true to themselves". The pieces have to connect between the artists and might I say "mainstream"

The only really unfair review for any of GaGa's albums is that stupid tinymixtapes one for Born This Way, and they're the scum of the earth anyway.

There are a lot of indie or underground or niche albums that are not as good as they've been hyped to be. (and some not so indie; hello MBDTF!)
BUT.
Man oh man - have you listened to most mainstream pop ALBUMS? They are horrible! When you're not a "pop star," you're not looking to create the perfect radio hits - so you can concentrate on making a cohesive, coherent, cogent body of work.
Most pop albums are three-four great tracks (the singles), two-four cute ones and four-eight pieces of trash. FACT. That is the MAIN reason mainstream albums aren't acclaimed.

Because critically acclaimed does not make it good.
Gaga is critically acclaimed and successful, but
she made an album that belonged in the 90's.
Adele puts me to sleep.
MIA is inconsistent.
Gaga is dated.
Critics are just people, with their own preference of music... and that is all.

Honeslty, I know it's a weird thing to say that quality can be judged by popularity, but who decides what's "good"? Is there an official organization for this stuff? no. I dare you to go out and find an artist where EVERY critic agrees on. You won't because it doesn't exist, because quality is subjective.
Therefore, the best and only way to judge that is by sales. The best way to show your support for the music is by buying it.
