coco chanel started the whole tanning trend in the 60s, if anyone is interested. if you notice in any tv/films made during or after the 60s, the stars are tanned. they're the ones who made it chic
i don't think its a matter of wanting to be black for white people. its just perceived as more attractive. and lets be honest, i think white people know a tan is not going to make them look black, no matter how dark they get themselves
