Last year, I placed Ngaiire in my top five after listening to the flawlessness that was Once. Despite the fact that she's much lower on my list this year, I still really enjoyed her sophomore album! There's lots of gems on the album that includes from the aforementioned Once. I Wear Black, on the other hand, is a more melancholic track about loss but also newfound strength.
As much as I adore PJ, I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed in her most recent effort. One issue I had with the album was what seemed to be its lazy songwriting. Nonetheless, I did find this track to be the highlight of the album! Even though there are still some cringeworthy lyrics sprinkled in this song, I still really liked the melody of this one
Xenia Rubinos is one of my favorite discoveries of 2016 and her album, Black Terry Cat, is definitely worth listening to! Themes range from racism to emotional strife, which is represented in the likes of Don't Wanna Be. Also, her voice is just so gorgeous & soulful
a really funky & cute track tbh even if that hook is completely indiscernible, it still incredibly infectious!
Ok, the official name of the song is 愛のゆくえ but I had to google translate it for the sake of the little photo and it's actually a pretty cute title! Well, anyways, this track is more in the lines of dreampop/shoegaze and I'm so glad I got to discover it Chiaki Satō's vocals are absolutely ethereal and nicely contrasts/complements the more gritty guitar that becomes more present during the final minute of the song.
First time hearing I wear Black. It sounds pretty good. Xenia was also a first time discovery for me of the year. Her album was nice. Polymorphing was a early moth highlight for me and it remains that way. Couldn't get into PJ's recent effort.
The Future Of Love is AMAZING. I hadn't heard it before, I am in love. I'll check out more from them, I almost wish I could've heard it earlier to add it to my list. It's really hitting me right now.
Ngaiire is cool. I liked a few of her songs so its cool to see her. My favourite of the set is Polymorphing. Chairlift surprised me with their album, I didn't like them that much before it.
I liked your previous lists too, so i'm looking forward.

also just going to post my #20 & #19 for movies just so i can get it out of the way
20. The Eyes of My Mother
The first film on my list is the directorial debut of Nicolas Pesce titled The Eyes of My Mother. This indie horror film, which debuted at Sundance, has been met with pretty polarizing reviews. Some have felt that it's pretentious torture **** while some have praised its artsy nature and horrifying beauty. I'm pretty in the middle on this one, leaning more on the more positive side.
Long takes are constantly used to create a sense of dread, but it can feel like its starting to drag, despite having a short run time. However, with that said, this is still a pretty strong directorial debut. One of the highlights for me, especially, is the cinematography. Despite depicting gruesome actions by a sociopathic woman who has been stripped of any sense of empathy, the black-and-white cinematography is absolutely gorgeous.
19. Divines
This little French drama can be found on Netflix where you can follow two young girls attempt to escape their poverty-ridden lives by any means necessary. On top of that, the film also tackles themes of religion, morality, love, and, most importantly, friendship. Even if the two girls are forced to face some problems in this emotional rollercoaster of a film, they always have each other to turn to and help each other through their messes. Also, the lead Oulaya Amamra delivers one of the greatest performances of the year.
side note but i was seriously contemplating adding these la la land songs to my best songs list. didn't do it, but let's appreciate these masterful gems.
anyways, here we go!
20. case/lang/veirs - Atomic Number
a really pretty song. especially love the verses where the three simply interchange lines
19. HANA - Underwater
i originally had this up way higher on my list, but its charm has kind of grown old! still love it though. this and Clay are definitely my favorites from what she's had to offer so far
18. Kero Kero Bonito - Break
another really cute, bubbly, and infectious track i originally had trampoline as my kero kero bonito pick, but break is just a bit too irresistible
17. KING - The Greatest
one of the highlights off a really strong album i'm taking home the gold buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes buy emotion on itunes
16. Katie Dey - Fear O the Light
yeah, most of the song might sound like unintelligible gibberish, but i'd be lying if i said that it's not beautiful unintelligible gibberish<3
I'm not really the biggest fan of sci-fi, so I was really taken by surprise by how much I liked Arrival. Despite feeling a bit overrated, the movie is still well-directed and well-performed (but not enough to warrant another Oscar nomination for Amy, tbh!).
17. The Fits
Another directorial debut on my list, this time from Anna Rose Holmer. The Fits is a coming-of-age film with minimal dialogue as we follow the main character, Toni, attempt to fit in her community dance troupe. However, members of the troupe begin to suffer from seizure-like symptoms. The cause of these seizures is surrounded by mystery and seems to be more metaphorical and ultimately becomes up to the audience's interpretation.
Also, side note, newcomer Royalty Hightower honestly really impressed me in this film. Even though Toni rarely speaks, watching her react to the things around her (which ranges from watching her fellow dancers break out into "the fits" or simply watching the older girls dance) is oddly captivating and Hightower uses these moments to show us what's going on in her quiet character's head.
