I prefer the days when he used to make hooks from different vocal parts (ie. Don't Stop the Pop or Blame It on the Pop), rather than taking them directly from the songs he's sampling but anyway
This year was tragic, starboy and side to side being hits gives me hope for next year being slightly better. But we need more FUN pop music, pop music that's genuinely expressive and carefree and doesn't try to be deep. 80% of the hits this year have come across as contrived
yikes. u can't really "mix" this year's hits bc they've been so diverse, from EDM ballads to trap to dancehall to electropop to moombahton to tropical house to folk ballads… it's not that 2016 was tragic (it isn't/wasn't), it's just that hits this year have been to all over the place in terms of genre that there hasn't exactly been *one* specific trend.
Yeah this a no from me. I agree w you guys. It feels forced at this point. Like he didn't really want to use songs (Black Beatles or Starboy or Panda) because he didn't really know how to mix them. Urban is definately becoming more prominent and if he is going to continue these, hes going to have to adjust. Just using TIWYCF because it has that familiar pop sound isn't really fair imo. He also couldn't really make his own lyrics so it makes sense.
But the other thing is, the songs were way too much of a mix bag to pull together something melodically coherent and pleasant.
Pop is certainly changing. Pure pop is fading and I see that pop mashups are gonna fade along with it too.
