CHINESE INFLUENCES
The Chinese share many similarities with their Filipino neighbors. Their cultures both place great importance to the family. Respect for elders and the value of the family over own’s interest was greatly stressed. Chinese influence is evident in noodle dishes (bihon, miki, mami, lomi, miswa) which go by the general name of pancit. Throughout their repeated visits to the Philippines, the Chinese also brought with them their habits as well as the tangible marks of their civilization, the use of slippers and umbrellas.
From the Chinese, the Filipinos learned the use of silver and other commercial metals, the manufacture of gunpowder, and the art of metallurgy, and porcelain. Certain customs of the Filipinos were of Chinese origin. Among them were the arrangement of marriages by the parents of the bride and the groom, the practice of go-between in marital negotiations, the employment of professional mourners, the veneration of ancestors, and the filial respect accorded by children to their parents and elders.
The Filipino racial stock has been improved by intermarriage with the Chinese. In fact many great Filipinos possessed Chinese blood, such as: Dr. Jose Rizal, General Emilio Aguinaldo, General Jose Paua (pureblooded Chinese general of the Philippine revolution, and Sergio Osmena. Many Chinese words are found in the Filipino language. Among them are: sangko (eldest brother), pansit (noodles), and susi (key).
