BEYONCE was not risky. She literally had some of the biggest media hype of 2013, multiple huge endorsements, the best directors in the business, the best producers, and all that iTunes attention. And its about sex. Sooo risky.
Rather than go the pop-radio friendly route, X chose to do this concept album. I think it alienated some of her fans because they were expecting her to deliver sure-fire radio hits, but I'm glad she stuck to her vision.
Heck, most of what Pharell is producing now could have easily fit into Back to Basics so I ain't mad at X
