Before I continue with my top 120 singles of 2006 and enter the top 100, it's time to take a look at some of this year's local radio events. I'm from Cincinnati, and there were a few shakeups in our radio stations here that will define the year of 2006.


Why I chose WOXY
Cincinnati's beloved WOXY dates back to 1983, before most of us even existed. As the only truly independent alternative station in the region, it was fantastic. In 2004, though, the station ran out of resources and went off the air. Two months later, though, it came back on the Internet at woxy.com. It was like a radio miracle. The music, DJs, and everything and everyone we loved were back on the air. But much to our further dismay, the station went off the air again in September of this year. Surely this would be it, right? Finally dead? NOPE! Two weeks later, WOXY announced that they had been saved by an entrepreneur with millions of dollars lying around, and they came on the air a third time in October. This is the station that refuses to die. We'll remember 2006 as the year it came back from the dead, against all odds, yet again. Now, please WOXY, save us the heartache and just stay alive this time. I've already given a eulogy for you too many times.


Why I chose WSWD
The corporate alternative rock station around these parts has always been WAQZ, otherwise known as Channel Z, ever since 1991 or so. That station also had a near-death experience in 1998, when it surrendered its frequency to one of those KISS-FM pop stations. Wonderful. In 2000, however, it came back and everyone was happy. Well, in October of this year, imagine our surprise when we heard WAQZ was going away. Just about everyone in Cincinnati who likes alternative music was pissed. First WOXY goes, now this? We would've been left with nothing. As it turned out, though, a new alternative station called "94.9 FM The Sound" (WSWD) debuted in the Cincy area. Thank the lord there's something to listen to that only partially sucks. There's a lot of work that needs to be done to the station, but it's something. And that's better than nothing.


Join me later tonight as TC's top 120 singles and top 20 albums of 2006 continues! I'll finally be getting into my top 100 on the singles list. Also in the next few days, my top 20 albums, plus more of the year's most memorable events (imo).

Enough with radio, back to the singles: installment #3 is open us. Now, I'm finally getting into the top 100, but there's a long, long way to go. This list seems longer than it did in past years, probably because I've made so many fancy graphics this time...


First song I heard from this absolutely insane group out of Brazil. Check them out if you haven't.


Kind of a silly song, but since when has that stopped me? A+ for The Sounds on this one.


This one is an epic. Makes good company while driving, oddly enough. Not the last from Muse.


This is the highest showing from Evanescence, and it's also the first of the pretty pictures. I said it on HHOP and it's damn true: Evanescence's strength is in their piano-based songs that highlight Amy's beautiful voice.


The first single from the Chicks' excellent new album. Takes care of that whole debacle.


Cute video and quality song, but another one from the YYYs this year blew this out of the water.


Great song and video from Depeche Mode's last album, Playing The Angel. More from DM to come.


Led Zeppelin ripoff or greatest new band? You decide. Either way, Wolfmother has brought a style of rock that we haven't seen in a while, and this headbang-worthy single was a great way to lead it off.


I was probably the last to get into this song (just this month) but it's nothing short of wonderful. I think watching Corinne perform on Studio 60 and SNL is what did it for me. I need to listen to the whole album.


Gotta love the treadmills. This was great, it could be one of the best videos this year, and OK Go put on one of the most impressive performances at the VMAs. But since this is a song list, here it is at #91.
