I will never understand why Lana stans on ATRL hate Lorde so much. Like...they're polar opposites. How can you be so short-sited that you think there can only be one alternative female in pop music? At least when certain Rihanna stans hate on Rita Ora or Tinashe, it's because they can recognise a lot of similarities between Rihanna and the up-and-comers - in both their sound and fashion.
But Lorde and Lana? They're in completely different lanes. One is reminiscent of the 1960s and uses live instruments (specifically strings and guitars) while the other is 100% electronic and exists in 2014, with a lot of her fashion choices being influenced by Kanye West - not Priscilla Presley. One stands still when she performs, looking melancholy and heartbroken. The other thrashes around the stage like a possessed baby demon. One exudes femininity while the other embraces androgynous/masculine clothing, often wearing suits.
Like yeah, they can both get slapped with the "alternative" label, because they're not cookie-cutter Britney Spears/Katy Perry pop stars. But that is literally where the similarities end.
Apart from that, the only reason I can see why Lana stans hate on Lorde is because of that flyaway comment she made during her debut (which, hello, she made a lot of them because she was a 16 year old kid with no media training, who simply felt like she was sharing her opinions with her friends, until the media tried turning them into "feuds") - and it's not like she lied with her comment. 'Royals' was about the disparity between the lives of the artists she was listening to, and the life she was actually living. Lana Del Rey grew up incredibly privileged, and probably did spend her summers holidaying in the Hampton's. If anything, that only makes her more interesting to me. She's like a character out of 'Revenge' and probably had an upbringing that most of us could only dream of. All Lorde did with 'Royals' was say "I'm listening to these songs about living extravagantly when really I'm just sitting at my computer with my earphones in, talking to friends on facebook chat." Which is basically what we all do when we listen to Lana Del Rey's songs as well. When she said that, it wasn't shade. It's just the truth. I know people might like to listen to 'Ride' and think they're broken/tortured souls, travelling across America with a nomadic bikie gang because they have a "free soul" but at the end of the day, you're not. You're just some 18 year old sitting in your parents house with their earphones in, refreshing twitter. That's all Lorde was saying with 'Royals.' It wasn't a drag or anything.
There's seriously like no similarities between the two of them
/end rant.
