Mastering is the last step in the chain after mixing and putting the icing on the cake.

Mastering is making the tracks sound good for release, and for an album mastering it is to give all the songs the same overall volume and making it complete as a whole.

So, if this would be mastered it would sound like the final version. They'd first do the autotune and then master it. Using logic, tracks are not mastered and after that auto-tuned - it's the other way around.

Some people have no idea what autotune is. Every artists has their vocals mastered in the studio. The stems for HIAM have no pitch corrected layers. Britney's voice can sound very mechanical on it's on. There is also no auto-tune on The Big Fat Bass like people assume. Britney just sang in an abnormal key and layered her vocals.

She only uses background vocals in this not autotune. Autotune changes your voice, pitch, speed, tempo, makes it robotic. Listen to Till The World Ends, listen to KE$HA for Christ's sake!

I personally don't understand how you all are gobbling this up like it's Whitney Houston and/or Mariah Carey. This just proves even more to the non-fans she still can't sing. Her voice is off pitch half the time and at the end, in the final chorus her voice cracks.

I'm the BIGGEST fan of Britney and hearing this for the first time really moved me. I, by no means, am hating it but I'm not going to be delusional about it and think it's GRAMMY WORTHY ().

She sang better on the Break The Ice Acapella.

But alas, it's always been curious to know what Britney actually does sound like in the studio. No one sounds like they do on the track. They use computers to enhance their voices to fit better. It's rare for a singer to sing exactly like the studio version track, but it happens.

The only bad thing about this track, though, which I forgot to mention is the chorus. It just seems...unique.

This obviously isn’t pitch corrected, she sounds sharp (higher then she is supposed to be) all throughout the choruses. That's a very common problem with Britney though, probably because that's not her natural singing register. Auto-tune would fix that sharpness and bring her voice lower to strike the right natural key. So that rules out the song being auto-tuned. Which makes sense because the only part of Hold It Against Me that is auto-tuned heavily is the chorus sections anyway. The breakdown and the verses are all her natural voice. You can hear the auto-tune in the regular version based on how babydoll wind-up her voice gets in that section of the main track.

That being said her natural voice sounds great here. I don’t get why singers have to belt everything in order to be considered talented. She sounds good which is the main point, is it not? The point of a singer is to sound good and give a certain attitude, emotion to the song.

This is a solid vocal, hardly a bad take. Britney gets so much **** for her vocals and doesn’t get enough credit at all for what she does produce. There are several times in this take where her voice sounds strong and charismatic and yet she gets bashed for being ‘lazy’ vocally when that’s obviously not the case. I always like that Britney never sounds forced when she sings. It all sounds very natural and authentic and you believe what she is expressing in the song. I rather her give this then some soulless belting performance where it’s about the sheer vocal athleticism then about the heart of the material.

I still don’t get what people want from her. She gives you a song with little vocal manipulation done to it and you still bash her performance. She gives an emotive, truthful and lively vocal performance that belies intimacy and you want her to orgasm over a drum beat. Make up your mind.

As to her voice ‘cracking’ it’s not cracking. She is singing it in an alternative way that is actually different from the main version. She is playing with her vocals in that section and trying different inflections and making pronunciation choices. Which only strengthens the argument that it is a rough version of the track as the last chorus is a completely different vocal take then the one on the official version of the song. If you think it sounds ‘odd’ or ‘bad’ it’s just because you are likely used to hearing it sang in a different way and in a different key/melody.

Ehhh... there is barely such thing as songs that are Autotuned and songs that are not. 100% of commercially released pop songs anno now are Autotuned. I'm not talking about the extreme exploitation of Autotune, which resembles the effect that can be created through vocoders and has been very popular since a few years now. I'm talking about pitch correction, there's no artist whose live singing is identical to the studio recording, because there is always some post-processing done on the vocals. On every Britney song, on every album. There's no such thing as a "non-Autotuned" Britney song. Only a difference in the degree to which it is used. But it is nothing to be ashamed of, or to get all defensive about. Everyone uses it, even the best singers.

Agreed. She's no Christina-like belter, but she has a nice lower register. When she uses it properly, her vocals can sound lovely and full. So as much as I love Britney's dance music, I think it'd be interesting for her to release a more natural, emotional album at some point and prove that she can actually sing (maybe not like Beyonce, but certainly like an Alanis type).
