So as some of you might remember, Adele did really well on my Best Of last year, placing three songs in the Top 30. However, I really wasn't feeling her singles as much this year. RITD, SLY, and SFTTR all had some sort of huge climactic moment in the chorus, and that was completely missing from this song, all she did was repeat "Rumour Has It" a bunch of times, and the song got kind of annoying after a couple listens tbh. I don't believe it was the wrong single choice, of all the songs on the album it was probably her best bet for success, I just don't think it was anywhere near as strong as the first three. She still delivered great vocals though and it's better than most of the pop songs released this year so it takes the bottom position in my list. This is the first of two songs by Adele in the list.
149 Outasight "Now or Never"
And how could I resist putting this song in my list. It's so cute and fun and puts you in a good mood. However, the problem with the song is that it really focuses too much on the rapping. I don't think Outasight is a rap artist, he's a pop artist who can rap and he should focus on singing most of his songs instead. Also, I feel like the song is a little overproduced and the production overshadows Outasight's voice for a lot of the song. Still I can't fault it for what it is, a fun pop song and it was definitely one of my jams of the summer. This is the first of two songs by Outasight in the list.
148 Christina Perri f/Jason Mraz "Distance"
When Christina Perri announced that she would be re-releasing the final single from lovestrong. as a collaboration, I had high hopes for it. Sadly to say, I don't think she quite met my hopes. I like Jason Mraz well enough, but he really did nothing for the song, she might as well have just released the original version. This was also the first time I was really bored by one of her singles, it had nowhere near the same replay value as Jar of Hearts, A Thousand Years, or Arms. It's still a cute song though and it's always very soothing to listen to. This is the first of two songs by Christina Perri in the list.
147 Karmin "Hello"
Now we come to Karmin. The YouTube duo who became a viral sensation, got a recording contract, and achieved their dream of making it big. Unfortunately, it might not last long. After their first hit Brokenhearted, they released this as a follow-up, and it flopped pretty badly. To be fair, I don't think they deserved it. This is a really fun song with a great chorus, very similar to Brokenhearted tbh. However, Amy did try to focus too much on the rapping, I think she's a much better singer than a rapper and she should have stuck to that. They should take notes and improve for their next single, I really don't want them to fade so quickly. This is the first of two songs by Karmin in the list.
146 Adele "Skyfall"
We're already to the second entry of Adele. This time I'll give her credit, she did try to do another song in the vein of SFTTR and SLY, but it just really didn't work. Despite the promise of an epic chorus (let the sky faaaaaaaaall), it didn't happen so much, I could barely distinguish between the chorus and the verses, and after that first chorus the song just seemed to drag on and on. She did deliver a great vocal performance as always though and showed why she has become such a global phenomenon. Hopefully she can get it together for the lead single of her next album. This is the last of two songs by Adele in the list.
145 Rita Ora f/Tinie Tempah "R.I.P."
What seems to be a recurring theme in this set, that's causing so many of these songs to rank so low, is that they're fun pop songs and that's it, nothing to set them apart from the rest. And that's exactly what I think R.I.P. is. The chorus is memorable and gets stuck in your head, which is why I think I did end up playing it quite a bit, but when I look back on it there's nothing about this song that's so great at all. Sadly I think she ruined her chance to be huge in the US This is the first of two songs by Rita Ora in the list.
144 One Direction "One Thing"
Despite how overrated and annoying I think this band has become, they do have a few songs that I enjoy, and this is one of them. While songs like WMYB and LWWY are almost sickeningly bubblegum pop, One Thing is a little more stripped back, focusing less on the production and more on each of the members' individual voices (except Louis, he never sings for a reason ). But honestly, I wish they'd do more songs like this and it does look promising based on the new single Little Things. This is the only song by One Direction in the list.
143 fun. f/Janelle Monáe "We Are Young"
And now we see the first appearance of an alternative/rock song in the list. This is my favorite genre of music, and you'd think WAY would be right up my alley, but what confused me with this song is that it's not really alternative rock at all. The band is alternative rock, and so are many of their other songs, but this is pretty much a straight up pop song. Now I don't have a problem with pop songs, but I really think they don't suit Nate's voice, in the intro I thought it was Janelle Monáe at first because it sounded like a girl Fortunately fun. wasn't a one-hit wonder and got to prove what else they had up their sleeve. This is the first of two songs by fun. in the list.
142 Carrie Underwood "Blown Away"
Here's a song that was hugely hyped on ATRL, at least on the Games and Base sections. They were talking about how it was the best country song in a long time, that it should be a huge crossover hit, etc. But when I listened to it, I was sooooo disappointed. I mean, Carrie gave a great vocal performance, but that couldn't compensate for the overall blandness of the song. It just never really took off in the way that it should have. However, the song does tell an intriguing story, about a girl who wished for her abusive father to die in a twister. I love songs that tell stories and there are too few of them around nowadays, so that did allow me to warm up to it and chart it in the lower reaches of my countdown. This is the first of two songs by Carrie Underwood in the list.
141 A Rocket to the Moon "Whole Lotta You"
Oh my God. This song is soooooo damn cute. I've loved this band ever since they released Like We Used To, it was such a beautiful song and I listened to it all the time in 2010. When I heard this song, I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but I was definitely surprised. It was a huge change of pace, an upbeat song perfectly suited for AC and Hot AC radio. There's nothing that special about it, but as I said I can't get over how damn cute it is, it just makes me want to melt. This is the only song by A Rocket to the Moon in the list.
