Sorry, that change is by design. That feature was a hack that I crafted myself a long time ago. It would take far too much work to re-implement that feature, and it sort of screwed with vBulletin and the overall stability of the site anyway.

Fixed-width layout is much easier to handle than a who-the-hell-knows-width layout.

Unfortunately, that's by design, too. The off-site hosting of avatars is another hack that I cooked up myself. This new vBulletin uses the avatar in many, many more places; it would take weeks to replace all the code.
So now you pretty much have 2 avatars: an off-site one that shows up next to your posts (unlimited file size), and one hosted here at ATRL that shows up everywhere else (limited to 40 KB). It's complicated, it's stupid, but it's the
only way for you guys to have high-quality avatars at all.
