MTV: Recap

“Oh, I missed you,” Lady Gaga gushes to her audience. “How much did you miss me?”
It might seem a strange question to ask, considering the “G.U.Y.” singer’s been actively promoting her latest album, ARTPOP, since July of last year. But, this seems to be the underlying narrative of artRave: The ARTPOP Ball Tour, which kicked off in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday. Everything that has happened in this era thus far has been building to this.
Appropriately, the artRave followed Lady Starlight‘s opening set with title-track “ARTPOP,” which saw Gaga hinting at the possibility of such a reunion: “We could, we could belong together.” Along with six elaborate costume changes and what’s got to be half the world’s supply of confetti, what came next was, in many ways, an exercise in reestablishing the kind of strong, fan-to-artist connection that Gaga had achieved with the Born This Way Ball, before that tour was prematurely cancelled in early 2013.

Among the different personas she tried on during the show were a fashion-darling It girl (“G.U.Y.,” “Donatella,” “Fashion!”), a flighty, high-pitched goddess (“Venus,” “MANiCURE,” “Cake Like Lady Gaga.”), and a familiar, sales-friendly ghost of the past (“Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” and “Telephone“). There was even a version of herself who wore a plastic, inflatable, octopus-tentacle headdress with matching train (“PARTYNAUSEOUS,” “Paparazzi,” “Do What U Want,” “Born This Way“), which isn’t really as easy to sum up as the others, so thanks for bearing with me.
All of these radical makeovers (“trying on a few different outfits and a few different wigs to find myself again”) appeared to wear on the New York native, as she next appeared as a black latex-wearing, green-haired troublemaker on the edge for “Jewels N’ Drugs,” “Aura,” “Sexxx Dreams,” “Mary Jane Holland,” and “Alejandro.”
Suddenly declaring that she’s “not afraid to get filthy,” Lady Gaga began stripping topless onstage to the “Ratchet” instrumental, and she was soon joined by a team of stylists to assist her into a neon-dreadlocked raver look. It wasn’t a choreographed thing, though, but a backstage quick-change performed onstage.
Maybe #ijusthavealotoffeelings, but this intimate, vulnerable act of laying herself bare for all to see is the moment when she succeeded in rekindling that sought-after bond with the audience. I guess sometimes the simplest move is right after all.

Thumping through “Bad Romance,” “Applause,” and “Swine,” Lady Gaga closed the artRave with an encore performance of “Gypsy.” The lyrics bookended perfectly with the “We could belong together” promise that opened the concert: “Thought that I would be alone forever/ But I won’t be tonight.”
That’s the kind of feeling you’re more likely to hear a fan express about an artist, but I guess that’s what makes Lady Gaga and her Little Monsters’ relationship what it is.

She is known for her love of shocking when it comes to fashion.
But it seems Lady Gaga fancied toning things down a little as she kicked off her ARTPOP Ball tour at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida on Sunday evening.
The 28-year-old ditched her often macabre style for a cutesy latex leotard – more suited to the likes of Katy Perry – as she strutted her stuff on stage on Sunday.

Clawing it back: Gaga kept her costumes relatively simple but did chose to wear the leotard with ripped fishnet tights
While her leotard looked lovely, she opted to wear it with a pair of ripped fishnet tights that made it feel grungier.
She didn't just wear one outfit however and she soon reverted to her usual formula of outrageous costumes and outlandish wigs.
The multi-talented entertainer displayed her dancer's legs in long-sleeved mottled tights with a bright blue orb in the center of her chest - which was sadly, not as controversial as say, her iconic meat dress.
Singing her heart out: The singer made sure she put on quite the show for her Little Monsters
Crystal ball: The singer switched into a rather more intricate leotard as the show continued
Still, she rocked a shoulder-length platinum blonde wig with a fringe that framed her pretty face as she danced around in the costume that also included wide wings.
Gaga, whose given name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta later wore a long white wig with a futuristic white gown that was short up front and long in the back.
The hitmaker later switched into a white long-sleeved, one-piece outfit with a bikini bottom that showcased her toned pins.
Costume changes: Lady Gaga wore some daring designs during her concert
Lady in white: Gaga alternated between a short and long platinum blonde wig
Lady in white: Gaga wore a long white wig and a white dress with a lengthy train as she performed
The five-time Grammy winner later changed into a psychedelic rag doll outfit with a purple wig, neon green skirt and furry green wrappings around her legs and wrists.
Gaga's new tour will include dozens of shows in North America as well as 25 in Europe and several in Asia.
The tour is scheduled to end on November 10.
Ready to fly: Gaga looked like she was ready to take flight

Like an angel: Gaga spread her wings as she performed
Funky costume: Gaga wore an elaborate headpiece while entertaining her fans
She's a doll: Gaga at one point was dressed like a funky rag doll
Gaga last month had her wisdom teeth extracted before the big tour started.
She prepped for the tour last month by performing the final shows at New York's legendary Roseland Ballroom.
The singer also has a cameo in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Eva Gree, Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis.
The film is scheduled for release on August 22.
Rock out: Gaga covered up with a couple glitter shells on her chest while playing the guitar
Loving the latex: The show also saw her wearing tight trousers and a crop top
Giving a hand: Lady Gaga struck a pose while performing at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida

Review: Lady Gaga at BB&T Center in Sunrise
|
Quote:
Facing a sea of fans bobbing in fishnet, flourescent wigs and glitter makeup, Lady Gaga kicked off her tour at the BB&T Center in Sunrise Sunday night.
The concert made up for two canceled South Florida shows in March. And, she did not disappoint.
Changing her wigs and outfits for almost every song, the pop star kept the 2-hour show moving along with 19-some songs. The costumes were elaborate, involving everything from feathered wings to inflated octopus tentacles. Her voice was strong, bellowing over the chaos of frantic dancers and her own frenetic image projected above the stage. She first crossed off her recent songs, like “Donatella,” "Venus" and "MANiCURE," before launching into the singles that made her popular, like "Just Dance," "Paparazzi" and "Alejandro."
But the question many had going into this tour was if Gaga still has it. Her latest album, “ARTPOP,” sold in its first week far less than her previous release, “Born This Way” (2011), at 258,000. Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz" and Katy Perry's "Prism" both trumped "ARTPOP" in sales. The Atlantic went so far as to ask for Gaga to disappear, pronouncing her popularity "waning," and that she best "retire."
Of course, like so many pop stars ahead of her, Gaga is derivative. Her Japanese-Harajuku-inspired costume for "Bad Romance" was first worn by Gwen Stefani, and most recently, albeit badly, by Avril Lavigne in "Hello Kitty." Her bondage latex suit was reminiscent of Britney Spears, and before that Madonna. The long blond look she's been taking on lately is Cher’s. And her song "Born This Way" is parallel to Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful."
The difference, however, between Gaga and these other blond babes, is she could not care less what people think. That's her charm.
During the show, Gaga said that ever since her career began, people thought she was too much, complaining that she sang too much about fame, darkness and art. But she wanted to be remembered for all these things, and how uncomfortable she made the world.
So comfortable, actually, that one of her costume changes was done onstage. She went down to pasties and a thong, even revealing a skull cap sans wig. Madonna, Cher, Christina and even Britney never went that far. They never revealed what laid underneath.
"All the wigs and my outfits are such a part of who I am," said Gaga, but she concluded that what was important was not the outside but the inside.
And so not surprisingly, the best song of the night came when she sat at the piano in just a leotard, playing "Born This Way."

Lady Gaga kicked off her latest world tour in her usual controversial fashion by stripping down to just her underwear and baring her breasts onstage in Florida on Sunday night.
The Poker Face superstar is embarking on her artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball, the third major trek of her career.
The singer is no stranger to shocking fans with outlandish stunts, and she didn't hold back at the tour's opening night at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale.
After performing her hit Alejandro, she told the crowd she was "not afraid to get a little filthy". She then proceeded to rip off her green wig before assistants rushed on to help strip off her outfit. She was left exposed in front of thousands of fans, standing in just a pair of panties, with her nipples covered in silver 'pasties'.
The tour will travel around the world, coming to an end in Portugal on November 10.
