The segment seemed pretty self-aware in highlighting that the impression was mildly racist and offensive. Unless I am missing something? Like, it would have been different if it just ended on that girl doing the impression and no one batting an eye, but to me it only made the show because of what followed after.

It wasn't funny nor made the show. These girls worked their asses to get where they are, they are well aware that they don't speak English very well, came to the U.S. for their fans.
Look at one of the rep of the group comment:
"If we think about it from a different perspective, it′s like pointing out the accent of a foreign celebrity that′s promoting in Korea," said the rep. "Due to this issue, the members are quite upset, and Jung Hwa is going through inner struggles."
Coming to the U.S. Was their dream, not even singing there or anything, just be there. And it's kinda funny how Americans are the first one to always scream and throwing a rant for racism comments but are always the first ones to make those comments in their jokes and try to get away with it cause it's a joke. Nope it's not.
