This is exactly the problem. The majority of Americans are for stricter gun control laws already, it's the NRA and powerful lobbying that buys up representatives and senators to make them vote the other way. The system needs to be shown this a thousand times over, but hyping it on the news every time it happens only makes yet another unstable person wipe away the last ounce of sanity that tells them this is wrong and it happens again.
The glorification of these douches happens inadvertently when it's over-reported like with that kid from Santa Barbara who made Youtube videos about his plans.
