But can you blame someone for listening to today's hits? When they are growing up... today?
You also need to remember not everyone is a hardcore music fan -- that they will take the effort to research music that influenced today's sounds. Everyone is different, not everybody is going to do the same thing.
And I'm not saying you have to be born in the 80s to love rock music, but many things influence what genre you're into. For instance, my parents like MJ, some African artists, Destiny's Child and so on. Now, I mainly listen to urban music -- pop now and then since its been so exposed to me when I was little. Rock has never been part of my life and I don't have any interest to start listening to it. For starters, the angry fans don't really make me want to learn about it.

I don't think there's an issue with not knowing the less mainstream rock artists. It would be a problem if you didn't know who Freddie Mercury is etc.

And then when I saw 'Pink Floyd', I literally asked who they were. I was expecting answers like: 'they're a band' or 'really huge artists, you should get into their music.' but I literally got dragged to hell and back for something I can't control

I don't know any either. I only know 3 rock groups Coldplay, Maroon 5 & Kings of Leon (thanks to Beyoncé). I grew up in a majority black city and none of the people I know use rock groups. R&B/Hip-Hop is the most popular. If I were to try and play some Rock music around my people they would tell me to cut that **** off

This baffles me as well. Even unrelated to this topic I am always confused when people enter a thread about an artist they don't know only to post "who???" as if it is sassy and edgy.Or all the people who didn't hesitate a second to discredi Beck at the Grammys because they didn't know him. All the information in the world is 4 clicks away and some people prefer to remain uninformed.
