Had digital sales been relevant through the past decade, Britney would be sited for sure.

Just Dance has sold 5.6M and spent just 3 weeks @ #1.

Poker Face has sold 5.3M and spent 1 measly week @ #1.

Bad Romance has sold 4M and broke the pop spin record and peaked @ #2.

Paparazzi sold 2.6M and did great on radio, and peaked outside the top 5.

90s: Grunge or Lilith Fair? Lilith Fair was (and is again) a collection of female singer-songwriters (which have always existed), while grunge was a new subgenre. The foremost grunge band was Nirvana, which defines this decade to me. Sarah McLachlan and her Lilith Fair compatriots tie for second. (I'd even note the Spice Girls for their "girl power" imagery).

The didn't say anything about Mariah in the Artists of the 90's and she was named Artist of that Decade by Billboard?

But Britney has those tremendous album sales. You can't have it all, depending on what era you explode in (if you're luck enough to even explode).

Yep, physical sales were no where near the numbers of digital singles today, but the same could be said for albums back then to now.

Because digital music wasn't popular at the beginning of her career, physical copies were. Britney didn't have that though because Jive held back on releasing majority of singles physically, to garnish album sales. Which is where her 32,000,000+ in the US comes from, but an obvious lack in single sales mention prior to.

But as you said, her selling 20 million digital copies in only the last 3 years proves she can sell singles too. But JIVE wanted the albums...despite not even updating them anymore.

Gaga is only mentioned in the '10s and its not even over, they're saying she might be the girl for this decade. Britney can only be mentioned in the '00s and Beyonce took that spot.
