Last year after I graduated college.



My parents told me I should just focus on school and since I had money from my college fund (I got a full scholarship) I didn't need to work but looking back that was a mistake because it's hard to find a job when you've had no prior experience.

I remember helping to deliver papers at around age 10. I would mostly spend the money on sweets.

I also did volunteer work at a farm during summer hols, helping to feed rescue animals (horses, pigs, chickens, goats, etc).

I didn't work during 2002-2006 as I was too busy at secondary school.

My first employment (using my NI number) was at the age of 16-17. I shortly after applied to work at Heaven/G-A-Y. I was always paid cash in hand (obviously) and they didn't bother to check my passport until I was 18. By then I had been fired..

I had to fight my mama tooth and nail to get that job because she didn't want me working and thought it wasn't necessary/would hurt my grades; my stepdad had to step in and talk her into signing my work permit with an agreement that I would have to quit if my grades dropped. It was nice -- quiet, I could read and get homework done. I liked it a lot.

What really screws kids over is when their parents won't let them get jobs/pay for everything so they have no work experience into their twenties.

One of my friends is still in school at 24 and still has never had a job. It's a bad idea.
