Firstly, there are elements in our identity which are intrinsic and core parts of our identity. These aspects of ourselves will not change over time, and to change them would be to change our very identity. I would say 'core' or 'intrinsic' parts of our identity include sexuality and gender.

Is sexuality really that essential to our identity though? We gays have made it out to be because it's a way to protect us from discrimination and be more united if you will, I think. Sexuality seems to be pretty fluid, how can something so variable and individual to each person be something that defines us a whole? Even though it is.

Secondly, there is a difference I would say between a) natural identity evolution, if you like, which I would say is a natural process involved in the blossoming of one's identity and b) a radical and sudden alteration to one's identity, which I would regard as a decisive and clear shift away from identity.

Given we could suddenly change it really is different though. If someone grows to understand they might be bi and not straight as they thought is completely different to altering it with a pill. But don't we live in a society where we change ourselves to fit in already? Plastic surgeries being the most out there example.
