She flopped hard with songs like sweet and poppy Loverboy and Boy (I Need You) as well as her non-R&B ballads like Never Too Far and Through The Rain. Mariah's comfort zone and her best material is hip hop/R&B influenced, and it's the kind of music that not only SHE needs to do to be successful nowadays, but it's very difficult for anyone to have a #1 single without urban/rhythmic airplay.

My thing was her music tended to flop when she had rap artists in her music. I don't consider Loverboy poppy at all. She had Luda and Da Brat in it, and back then Ludacris wasn't really a pop-accepted artist. Look at the flops:
"Breakdown" (w/Bone thugs n harmony) "Sweetheart," I think was with JD, "Crybaby" (Snoop?) "Say Something" (Snoop) "The Roof," "Boy" sampled Cam'ron's track, who is a hip-hop artist,
TEOM was successful because the rap cameos were kept to a minimum.
