If someone randomly attacked me in "the Forrest" and I murdered them in self-defense, I wouldn't be guilty of a crime, so I would tell.

If they were someone important, same answer; and if the consequences were dangerous, same answer again.

We could go back and forth with hypothetical situations here...

If I were being pursued by a dangerous and important individual, it would be safe to assume it wasn't by chance. Assuming I'm involved in some type of mafia or gang to trigger said individual wanting me dead, then we're presuming I am at least guilty by association of involvement in some type of crime ring. Then in that case, the cycle would be endless.

Regardless of whether I tell the police or not, if I killed the leader of a dangerous gang, they're going to come looking for me once they realize he's missing. The possibilities are endless, but again, the OP wasn't too clear on that, so I guess we're free to go anywhere with it!
