This is not surprising to me at all. I think I once read somewhere that education was inversely correlated to religiosity as well.

A few atheists I've met bash religion yet they learn all they can about it. Not to mention they get upset when people come at them but they do the same thing.
But My favorite teacher who was an atheist made an interesting point:
"If your parents raised you to believe that pink elephants, then you'll believe pink elephants exists"
anyways I believe in god/theres something beyond life, but I don't believe everything that's from the bible and I don't live my life according to the bible aka a book.

Well what is our purpose then? We are already consuming resources at a greater rate than the earth provides, one third of our population is marred by poverty and disease, our history is colored by war (a lot of which get started due to religion and God) and global warming zealots are already saying that we are digging our own grave. What purpose are we supposed to be fulfilling?

what bothers me the most is that these people who don't even know their own religion try to use it to justify their political agendas, especially when it comes to the anti-gay groups

Well, I don't know about them, but I have Jesus in my life. I'm not perfect, no, I have my flaws, but I'm so thankful to have a God who cares and has a plan for my life. With all the evidence and ways of the world, to me it's ridiculous for anyone to try and deny that there is SOME sort of deity in existence.
And I think why Atheists probably know most about religion is because they are probably in denial with themselves. I heard a story once about a man who was always criticizing Christian and claiming that God didn't exist. He fell into a deep ditch, got stuck, and it was caving in. And even HE got on his knees and prayed to God.
I love Christ and he gives me hope and a future.

I understand this mentality completely as i was raised a catholic and attended catholic elementery and middle school. One of the primary differences between the religious and atheists seems to be the comfort level with "not knowing".
Religious people find comfort in the fact that their life has been preplanned by a sky god while atheists and agnostics are comfortable with the realization that our individual existence is insignificant, and that life is solely what YOU make of it....That independent mindset and sense of control over ones own life is the ultimate freedom.
Odly enough, i wasn't aware of any evidence of a christian god... unless your speaking about the bible, which happens to be one of my favorite books

One of the main questions that would play over and over in my mind, that ultimately led me to other more important questions and eventually to dismiss religion entirely....
"WHY would an all-mighty God, capable of anything, send his only child to earth on a suicide mission to save his 'creation" ?

Right?! It ****in irritates me when people think "oh, well I was taught this" or "well I grew up in this kind of household." That's cute and all when you're five, but when you're an adult and your only reason for your beliefs is through ~tradition~ instead of actual research and your own studies about your religion is ignorance.
& then preachers turn out to be the biggest hypocrites ever but people still fall for it and think that them attending church every Sunday will all of a sudden stop them from eternal damnation or whatever negative repercussion they believe in.
This survey doesn't shock me at all.
With that said, I guess I could consider myself agnostic. I'm uncertain about what exactly God is and I don't use Jesus or the Bible as a belief system. I do pray from time to time to calm myself- more so as a form of mediation than ~praying my sins away.

It makes perfect sense atheists and agnostics would know a lot about religion, perhaps even more than a good deal of religious people. I mean, you CAN'T truly and honestly disagree with something you don't know; you have to know it in order to question it and then form an informed opinion on why you disagree with it. Meanwhile, it's a lot easier to agree (or to say that you agree) with something that you don't know.
Like, if someone speaks before you, and you say, "I disagree," you're expected to give arguments as to why you disagree with the person to make your claim valid. If the person after you says that s/he agrees with you, though, they more likely than not will not be asked to give arguments for WHY they agree with you: We just take it as implicit fact (even though it's a bit of circular logic) that a person agrees with another because they have the same arguments.
Also, as someone who does workshops on Church History at my Catholic parish every once in a while, I've noticed that most people, even the some of the more pious ones, rarely ever demand to learn more about theology, history, and the Church's traditions. Instead, they prefer all the 'spiritual' and 'charismatic' stuff, which I understand can be appealing to some and in many ways helpful... But still, they should also care about what makes the Church what it is now, and not just what about religion makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside, because then they pretty much grow ignorant of the religion that they say they spouse.

Dear Lawd!
I love these atheist-comes-to-know-the-Lord-in-his-time-of-need fables propagated by the Christian community.

I believe in God. And I'm a Roman Catholic. And that's all that matters.

Mankind has committed all the deadliest sins and become evil since the creation. And the punishment for sin is DEATH, eternal death in the eternal fires of hell that is. But because the Almighty God loved mankind so much, He gave us one more chance. He said He would forgive mankind of its sins completely and promised them they will reach the Promised Land at the end of time. But before it all happens, someone must sacrifice. And that is Jesus Christ. He sent His only begotten Son to pay for our sins and redeem the world from damnation.
Actually, God can do all these things in an instant. Nothing is impossible with Him. But the God that we have is not the one who does magic. He wants it to happen the hard way. Because only through this we will learn our lessons.
Jesus Christ, from his Heavenly throne descended to earth and take the form of a man, was born, lived, suffered, died like any ordinary man, not only to redeem us from our sins, but also to show us the virtue of humility and to teach us that no matter how privileged or successful we are, we all are still in need of mercy of God.
Most of us think that LOVE is greatest of all, that love can move mountains and conquer everything, but there is one thing greater than love. And that is God's MERCY, the only thing that keeps us going til this very day despite our ingratitude and wickedness.
