My happiest discovery from this rate was "Free Your Mind". I've heard the hook several times over years, but never heard the song in full. Never knew how hard-rock it was. Looking back on the Janet rate, and my love for "Black Cat", it's apparent that black women singing over hard-rock instrumentals just does something for me

You're forgetting the one-two punch of the worst singles of their career, aren't you? Cater 2 U followed by Stand Up for Love ... they weren't even trying at that point.

Ha ha! I can definitely relate. "If" and "Black Cat" are two of my favorite Janet songs, and I love "Free Your Mind" as well. I think it's something about mixing the hard edge of electric guitar with soulful vocal performances, because I have such a weakness for quiet storm ballads with electric guitar in them. Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor" and Beyoncé's "1+1" are perfection for me, in that regard.

I was ready to give Destiny's Child a pass because I actually like "Cater 2 U," but I completely forgot about "Stand Up For Love"! Since it didn't chart on the Hot 100, I didn't include it in this rate and it completely slipped my mind. Man, that was truly a pathetic ending to their career.

Now I'm thinking that maybe TLC closed it out the best among all these groups? Sure, carrying on as a twosome after Left Eye's death was definitely a poor choice (as was the utterly forgotten UPN reality show they had trying to replace her), but "Damaged" is a really gorgeous song. I wish it had been a bigger hit.
