Muslims are not allowed to depict Prophet Muhammad in art or drawings. There are no paintings of him in mosques or in the homes of Muslims like there are of Jesus. Even movies made about his life are shown from his pov instead of hiring an actor to play him. That's why drawings of him are controversial since essentially drawing him is disrespecting him, so of course Muslims are going to be offended when their most revered and respected figure is disrespected.

Bruce, religion is a VERY touchy subject for most. I believe the whole thing is what's holding back society from being progressive but for some, it is their life. It is the morals, code of conduct they live by.

To see some exploit that for no reason other than to cause a stir would greatly anger people.

Ever since the french revolution, it is the principle of separation of religion (private places) and state (puplic places). It is based on respect for freedom of thought and freedom of religion.
Any religious apparel or displays by individuals, such as the Islamic hijab, Sikh turban, (large) Christian crosses and Jewish Stars of David are banned from public places. But of course it's extremely easy to hide a cross or a stars of David, not so much to hide a hijab or a kippah ...

The only places where you'll find those paintings are in CATHOLIC edifices and households.
That's one of the many distinctions between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians.

Charlie Hebdo's cover is not at all offensive. They can't backtrack after what happened, if so, all would have been done for nothing.
In what this drawing of Muhammad sheding a tear, holding a "Je Suis Charlie" pancart with a title above "All is forgiven" is insulting ? I don't get it, I reallt don't. He is represented as a peaceful "being", allowed as well to the freedom of speech and accepting it.
And the "All is forgiven" is moving. Such a shame people interprets it otherwise.
