The YECA: Top 100 Singles of 2012 (100-91)
How about a little surprise? Not only am I going to post the first set today...but I'm so pumped up and ready to get things started that the first set is being posted now.
| Orgy
Grime of the Century
#100s of the Past:
2011: The Smashing Pumpkins - "The Fellowship"
2009: Metallica - "Cyanide"
The top 100 kicks off with the return of Orgy, or, as I like to refer to them as, "Jay Gordon's Main Project". For the new version of Orgy, Jay Gordon enlisted help from, among others, members of Deadsy. The first result of the newest incarnation of Orgy is a dubstep-influenced (but still distinctly Orgy) tune entitled "Grime of the Century". I just didn't get into this song as much as I probably should have, hence why it's only #100. But make no mistake about it...despite the dubstep influence, this song still feels like the Orgy that I grew up listening to. |
| Atlas Genius
Trojans
#99s of the Past:
2011: Britney Spears - "I Wanna Go"
2009: Eminem - "3am"
This song was destined to be a hit the moment it was released to US Alternative radio this year. "Trojans" is an incredibly catchy song, with a chorus to die for and lyrics that anyone can understand. In other words, it's perfect for today's pop environment. My favorite aspect about the state of music in 2012 is the influx of more alternative and indie music into the pop scene, and "Trojans" will be one of many songs that will infiltrate the pop conscience in 2013. You can quote me on that. |
| Fiona Apple
Every Single Night
#98s of the Past:
2011: Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - "We Found Love"
2009: Oasis - "I'm Outta Time"
I'm kind of glad that music critics don't browse forums like ATRL, because many of them would lose their minds seeing this song so low on my top 100. And that's nothing. Just wait until you see some of the songs AHEAD of it! But anyway, "Every Single Night". There's no denying that it's a gorgeous and beautiful song, but I just couldn't connect with it personally. It's certainly good enough to make the top 100, though. |
| The Gaslight Anthem
Handwritten
#97s of the Past:
2011: Foo Fighters - "Walk"
2009: The Dead Weather - "I Cut Like A Buffalo"
Speaking of songs that I couldn't connect with, The Gaslight Anthem, despite releasing a pretty good album, just couldn't grab me like they were able to with The '59 Sound in 2008. Well, besides one song that will appear much later down the road. But that's much later down the road, after all. "Handwritten" was the second single off of their latest album of the same name, and the song sounds just like a song that you would expect from The Gaslight Anthem. It's good, no doubt about it, but something seems to be missing. |
| Soundgarden
Live to Rise
#96s of the Past:
2011: My Chemical Romance - "Sing"
2009: Rammstein - "*****"
Not only was this song the primary song from The Avengers soundtrack, only the biggest movie of 2012...this was also the first Soundgarden song in many, MANY years. Imagine our surprise when the song really wasn't anything special. But that's okay. Later on in the year, they would release an album with tons of killer tracks that would make us forget about such a pedestrian return song. It's a good song, but, for Soundgarden's standards, it's merely average. |
| AWOLNATION
Kill Your Heroes
#95s of the Past:
2011: My Morning Jacket - "Holdin' On To Black Metal"
2009: Say Anything - "Hate Everyone"
Out of the three major singles from AWOLNATION, this is the one that hit me the least. "Kill Your Heroes" is catchy, but it doesn't have the immediacy of "Sail", or the loveliness of "Not Your Fault". All three songs are catchy, but "Kill Your Heroes" lacks that special something that would have pushed it in the upper echelon for me this year. But man, is the song ever catchy, though. |
| Dead Sara
Weatherman
#94s of the Past:
2011: Red - "Faceless"
2009: Neko Case - "People Got A Whole Lotta Nerve"
I seriously thought that this song would help to usher in something new in mainstream rock, but, alas, this song barely made much of an impact before dying a quick death. It really surprised me, because "Weatherman" has a feel of different throughout. I think it's the combination of the female vocals and the sludge rock that put it over the top for me. I'm still blown away that this song didn't do all that much on rock radio, especially when another band with a female singer did REALLY well this year... |
| Halestorm
I Miss the Misery
#93s of the Past:
2011: Lady Gaga - "You and I"
2009: The Lonely Island ft. T-Pain - "I'm On A Boat"
And hey, speaking of that band with a female singer...admittedly, I understand how Halestorm broke out this year while Dead Sara stayed in the doldrums. The lead singer is one HELL of a looker and an even better belter. The music also sounds more conventional and suited to rock radio in 2012. And that's really the description of this song in a nutshell. The song sounds almost generic, with Lzzy Hale's booming vocals being the sole reason why this song is not just another rock song in a sea of them. |
| Red Hot Chili Peppers
Look Around
#92s of the Past:
2011: Ladytron - "Mirage"
2009: Home Video - "I Can Make You Feel It"
After RHCP's relative success on last year's YECA singles list, they did NOT fare as well in 2012. Even though I enjoyed the single releases from the band in 2012, they were RHCP in stasis. They are RHCP to their core, but they are also RHCP to their core, in the sense that there's not much innovation to be found. For some bands, that's not a bad thing, and that's not ALWAYS bad with RHCP, but, here, it just feels like old hat. |
| fun. ft. Janelle Monáe
We Are Young
#91s of the Past:
2011: Eminem - "Space Bound"
2009: Silversun Pickups - Substitution"
I felt obligated to place this song in the top 100, but I don't feel all that comfortable about it. At one time, "We Are Young" was one of my most played songs of the moment. That's not hyperbole, I overplayed the hell out of this song. Just for that reason alone, it's here on the list...but only just. Honestly, it's one of the weaker songs off of Some Nights. Catchy as hell? You bet it is, but Some Nights is full of catchy songs that are also more enjoyable beyond just being catchy. There's still the chorus, though, which is one of the most singalong-worthy choruses in a long time. So there's that. |

Ten down, ninety to go. Of this list, anyway. Oi. In the next set, we'll encounter a return single from one of the most beloved bands of the last twenty years, the weakest single from one of my favorite albums of last year, a single that I just found out about a week ago, a non-album single from the artist that dominated 2011, and the first of four singles from one of the most dominant artists of 2011 for yours truly. I have a feeling that the next set will go over better with the ATRL populace than the first set.
Also, at some point over the next couple of days, we'll take a look at the first superlative of 2012, as we will find out what was my favorite game of the year. Stay tuned, because we're only just getting started.
(PS: I totally said that I wouldn't comment like crazy this year. Not only was I wrong, I was wrong in record time! )

The first set is already up
Great introduction I agree time has really flown away so fast this year. I still remember posting my 2011 cd like it was two months ago.
From the first set I really love Soundgarden, fun, RHCP, etc. Look Around is the best song they've put out in years IMO.

I didn't know orgy is back the "Blue Monday" Orgy right?
Look Around is great but their last album is kinda disappointing
maybe John Frusciante is the biggest factor of RHCP Static
and We are young too low :
and great to see fiona apple, soundgarden and gaslight anthem on your list
