It sounds like a lot of you are saying gays should go out of their ways to be as non-offensive and vanilla as possible. He's big on top 40 radio for gods sake it's not like singing about women would bother their young adult women demographic. Sam doesn't seem to be focused on breaking boundaries for other gay artists or fighting homophobia, just making sure he sells music.

If someone wouldn't be ok with you openly singing about your sexuality, why would you want them to listen to you?

I think he just doesn't want to be known as Sam Smith the gay singer. He doesn't want to be labeled. Sometimes I forget that he is actually gay and I'm sure some of his fans (straight) still don't know he actually gay. It's a marketing tool. He's trying to appeal to everyone.

His career is one hundred percent about his sexuality though... he sings love songs about relationships and heartbreak. He wants it to be about his sexuality, but not about being gay.

I'VE ALWAYS had the feeling he was just shadowing his personality. Like idk, it really stands out to me.

Look at how he was before fame when that stuff leaked.

Now he's so quiet, trying not to act feminine, doing these non-personal songs (ballads and deep yet they don't actually relate to him personally as you pointed out, he changes everything to be safe), and his personality is different.

Yet before he was on Twitter with the wigs, the open stanning, and the crushes. Idk, I think his label probably has to do with him having a 'shelved' / closet like personality.

Yaaaaas sis! He's very transparent. I agree it could be his label but it's not like they had to push him... they could have pushed a different, straight artist. Maybe he agreed to this in order to be put in the spotlight?
