But, um, in real life and with real people, opinions change over time, and ARTPOP wasn't written in one day...

But if she's come to the conclusion that it can ruin lives, shouldn't that be the message she conveys to her fans? Why say "drugs are awesome! But they can also ruin your life so don't do them..."? If you listen to 'Mary Jane Holland' on its own, which I'm sure a lot of her stans do, it still glamourises the use of marijuana, which is a gateway drug that can lead to worse drugs. Why would she want to glamourise drugs when she herself has come to the conclusion that they can ruin lives? Isn't she better off just conveying that message to her fans?
I understand that it's honest to say "yeah they're awesome and they're so much fun, BUT..." but that doesn't change the fact that teenagers (who are extremely impressionable) are hearing the "they're awesome" bit. And once someone has experimented, you don't know how they'll react or how they'll enjoy it, or how frequently they'll continue to use it, or whether or not they're the sort of person who'll want to experiment with other, worse drugs. Furthermore, the majority of addicts experimented at an incredibly young age. The best way to prevent addiction is to offset early experimentation with alcohol and drugs. When I was in drug and alcohol counselling, the first question I was always asked was "how old were you the first time you drank/got drunk?"
It's just my opinion. I think it's a really inconsistent message, and when the ARTPOP tracklist was on the cutting-room floor before it's release, I think she should have chosen one or the other.
