That isn't necessary a bad thing. When someones in a relationship, they want everyone to know who their dating not because they want to out them, but because they want it to feel sincere, because they're proud of who their boyfriend is and they love them. I can totally see where he's coming from, he probably went through a phase where he lived in the closet and he probably doesn't want to live in the closet through someone else.
