I wouldn't be surprised if we as fans have more emotional attachment to some of her hits than Rih does. I can link a lot of her pop songs to important times in my life, but can she? Do they mean anything to her? Or do they recall memories of singing onstage, forcing emotion, and feeling like a robot? What if they literally remind her of BAD memories? Times when she hated her job and wanted to quit? Why should she be forced to sing these songs for the rest of her life if they mean literally nothing to her?

I think it's hard for her to fully commit to songs she doesn't care about. Songs that were just there and mean nothing to her. Imagine singing a song you hate every time you stepped on stage. It would be frustrating and draining. She doesn't want to pretend or act, she wants to truly feel what she's singing. That doesn't mean that she's abandoning pop or even dance songs, but she's too old to just be singing something because it's catchy. There are plenty of younger girls who can do that now. Will they do it as well as Rih? No, but that's their (and our) burden to bear.

Finally, because the meltdowns are already starting, please remember that 45S was a Kanye song that she snatched. While the feel/content of the song may be indicative of R8, I highly doubt that the actual sound is. I would implore you to reference the snippets when making a "R8 is going to sound like this!!!1!1" argument.

amazing post and I agree with you about how we have emotional attachment to her songs.
I mean I ****ing grew up listening to rih since I was 13 and now i am 20 and every time i listen to one of her songs it's like i am listening to my life. like someone recorded my life and put it on albums.

Well we haven't heard the album yet but judging by FFS, the snippets and what she said about R8 during these interviews, I can already say that I'm really proud of Rihanna. More than ever. She's already released 7 albums and she's only 27. At such a young age she's already talking about making timeless songs and she's not afraid to put out risky songs after a 2 year hiatus. I mean, as a mainstream artist & the biggest pop star, making a "comeback" with a song like FourFiveSeconds was a big move. That's how fearless and confident she is. On top of that she collaborated with Paul McCartney on that song but some of y'all probably don't even know who he is judging by how y'all are getting mad over Rihanna talking about "real music".

Also, her last album came out 2 years and 4 months ago now, but unlike most artists who don't release any albums for 2/3 years, she didn't take a break. Not even a month off. She's always recording new music and when she's not in the studio, she's working on other projects aside from music. That's how she keeps breaking records.

Always proving those who doubted her wrong.

She can make soul-ful songs in a different genre than FFS. "Higher" will probably be one. "Stay" was also a soulful / heartfelt song, "Diamonds" is a soulful and timeless song as well.

"soulful" and "heartfelt" are thematic adjectives that can apply to any genre of music. if you simply listened to what Rih is saying, rather than listening to the way journalists are twisting her words and intentions, you wouldn't be having a meltdown right now
