Anyway i suggest for you to check:
Monster - (this is what can be called serious)
Death Note
Darker than Black
Black Lagoon
Baccano! - it's starting quite slow or more precise you need watch like 3-4 series before starting to get in it
Durarara!! - from creators of Baccano!
Seirei no Moribito
Mushishi
Ookami to Koushinryou (aka Spice and Wolf) - settings are like in SnK (middle age Europe type, but there is almost no fights)
Natsume Yuujinchou - (there are 4 separate series this is name of first. also its more fantasy/SoL type anime but sometimes it can get quite serious)

I consider dark and serious to be the same genre.
Anyways the bolded animes I watched :P Death Note is good. Black Lagoon is good from what I remember and Darker Than Black was also good

I liked Moribito quite alot. Very different from other animes

Spice and Wolf is highly recommended slice of life/romance/fantasy anime! I just enjoyed the two seasons of the anime and the light novels as well! gosh! I love the cuteness of holo and lawrence! i love the romance and you'll also learn economics at the same time!

Shin Sekai's Yori ending made me feel sad for the monster rats
Chrono Crusade was okay :P
