Everything you said is a good point and totally agree with it, but this - the word "baseless" specifically - and the tone of it aren't necessary. We can decide not to bend in the face of extreme or hateful viewpoints without turning this into a cosmogony and spirituality debate about whether religion should be a thing. We don't need to attack the presence of faith to denounce the practices of some of the faithful, and that's likely a pretty big cause of tension in topics like this. Saying "your religion/beliefs are false" simply isn't necessary when discussing whether this magazine is justified in its printings. I agree that law should never be faith-based, that social norms should generally not be faith-based, and that religion is
not an excuse for the creation
or breaking (in this case) of laws and norms, but faith still has a place in society and that's okay.
And to be clear, this is a general response to a lot of posts in this thread by a lot of users that rather rudely denounce faith as "fairy tales" or anything of the sort - as someone who does not follow any particular faith myself and has a distaste for organized religion due to many of the bad things it has caused, I still think it's offensive to a lot of people.
